content
In The Legend of the Ugly King , director Hüseyin Tabak embarks on a research trip that takes him to the places and people who shaped the life of Yılmaz Güney , who died in 1984 . Starting from the artistic high point in Güney's life - winning the Golden Palm in 1982 for the film Yol - his eventful life between the star hype, prison stays, revolutionary efforts and the struggle for a functioning family life is examined. Güney's Kurdish origins, his socialist sentiments and the resulting political opposition to the Turkish state also play an important role . Towards the end of the film, the circumstances of the escape from the Turkish prison on İmralı come into focus.

style
The Legend of the Ugly King is a film whose plot is mainly driven by film clips by and with Güney, archival material and interviews with companions and family. There are also sections that are reminiscent of the road movie genre , in which director Tobacco travels through France and Turkey to visit the places that shaped Güney's life.
Since the interviews and film excerpts are all in the protagonists' mother tongue, the entire film is subtitled.
