Gilles Jacob (actually Gilbert Jacob ; born June 22, 1930 in Paris , France ) is a critic , producer , writer , director and was President of the Cannes International Film Festival from 2001 to 2014.

Life

Gilles Jacob comes from a middle-class Jewish family. His father André Jacob was the head of the real estate trading house Auguste Jacob & Fils and his mother was the daughter of Lambert Levy, the general manager of Est Lumière, the predecessor of the Paris electricity distribution company. Jacob survived World War II in a children's home in the Alps and narrowly escaped the Nazis by hiding behind a harmonium during a raid . Louis Malle immortalized this scene on film in his work Goodbye, Children . After the liberation he returned to Paris in 1949 and, while still a student, brought out the film magazine Raccords, which appeared from 1950 to 1951 and of which he was editor-in-chief . One of the first to be published was an article by François Truffaut .

Cannes International Film Festival

From 1977 to 2001 Jacob was Artistic Director of the Cannes International Film Festival. The selection of the competition entries was his area of responsibility. In 2001 he handed over his position to Thierry Frémaux and was then President of the festival until 2014.

Quote

“The stairs are a religious metaphor. At the festivals in Venice and Berlin, the entrance to the premiere cinema is at ground level, as is the case at the Oscar awards. Only here in Cannes do you move up, higher and higher. "
