In 1978 the film directors Ruth Beckermann , Josef Aichholzer and Franz Grafl founded the film distributor Filmladen in Vienna.

In 1985, Filmladen took over the Votivpark Kino and has been operating it as a votive cinema since 1986 . Michael Stejskal and Susanne Anderle later took over the company. Stejskal is also the managing director of Luna Film , a distributor with a similar program and based in the same building as the film store. Beckermann and Aichholzer founded their own production companies.

In 2005, the film shop achieved an extraordinary result with 1.2 million cinema visits, with which the company was able to match the largest film distributors in Austria for the first time in terms of successful visits. This was due to the exceptional case that with Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a mainstream Hollywood production was on loan, which alone was responsible for half a million visits to Austria. Usually only a few films in the distribution program achieve more than 100,000 admissions per year. In 2006, the distribution success fell back to the level of 2004 and for the first time the third largest Austrian distributor, Polyfilm, had more visitors to its films than a film shop. However, this remained the exception and until 2008, Filmladen remained the undisputed market leader in the Austrian film production sector on its home market. In 2006, for example, of 37 films with Austrian production participation and around 450,000 cinema visits, 13 with around 290,000 visits were from the distribution of the film shop.

In 2008, Filmladen received competition from the newly founded Thim Film distributor , which specializes in distributing Austrian films.

In 2009 the film shop had the second best year in its history with 1.7 million visitors.

program

The distribution and distribution program includes over 600 feature films as well as numerous documentaries. Between 30 and 70 films are added annually (around 10 to 20% of the total annual film supply in Austria), including a large proportion of all Austrian productions in one year - both those with a commercial focus and those with artistic aspirations. The rest are mainly European, but also some American, mostly art-house productions. The rental and distribution market is almost exclusively limited to Austria, Germany and world distribution rights are assigned to foreign companies. As a distributor of Austrian films in Austria, the film shop is the market leader in terms of the number of visitors, ahead of the only other major distributor of Austrian films, Polyfilm .
