Jesus, you know is a documentary by Ulrich Seidl in which believing Christians entrust the Austrian director with their confessions and prayers. The film was awarded the Vienna Film Prize in 2003.
content
Six people in Vienna's churches entrust their confessions and prayers to God director Ulrich Seidl in a personal conversation. They ask for strength to be given to them in solving partnership problems, in conflicts and differences of opinion with their children, and in dealing with physical and mental ailments. The most intimate things are also discussed.
These monologues, in which the prayers look straight into the camera, are only interrupted briefly: by choirs and a few rigid shots that show the protagonists doing everyday activities at home.
The film shows people's need for faith and religion. At the same time, however, it also becomes clear that religion alone cannot adequately satisfy the need for closeness.
Emergence
First of all, the very different ideas of Jesus of the believers should be addressed in the film . However, director Ulrich Seidl ultimately decided against this variant, as the film was not supposed to depict "a Jesus documentary" as such.
In an interview with Karin Schiefer from the Austrian Film Commission , Seidl stated that he was deliberately looking for “no religious extremists” but people from “normal church people ” for his film . He was particularly attracted by “the intimacy between God and man” , which is probably “the most intimate thing there is” . “It's a big secret and a big taboo,” said Seidl.
