Good News (alternative title: Good News: Von Kolporteuren, Toten Hunden und other Viennese ) is a documentary film by the Austrian director Ulrich Seidl . The film, which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 1990 , mainly describes the daily life of newspaper sellers, also known as “colporteurs”, in Vienna in the late 1980s.

content

Good News is Ulrich Seidl's first feature-length film and contrasts the areas of life of people who sell newspapers with those who read them. Ulrich Seidl's typical film style, which can also be found in his later works such as “Hundstage” or “Models”, conveys the desolation of being a migrant in Austria as well as the dull indifference of newspaper customers in long, silent shots. Even the involuntary comedy of a training video for colporteurs, in which the connection between friendliness when selling newspapers and the resulting higher income is clearly illustrated for illiterate people, leaves the viewer pensive. According to Ulrich Seidl, however, he didn't want to make a film that denounces the machinations of the big newspaper companies or arouses pity for the newspaper sellers, but rather, “[...] one that looks at one's own everyday life and that by observing strange worlds Madness steers. ”(Ulrich Seidl).

Reviews

"Seldom has anyone in a film shown the terrible regularity of everyday life, the madness of normality, with such consistency, with such a will to style."

- Werner Herzog : The standard

“A great job. Aesthetics as a strategy of morality, which makes people like their living environment speak without comment. "

- Wolfram Schütte : Frankfurter Rundschau
