Wolfgang Thaler (born March 9, 1958 in Möllbrücke ) is an Austrian cameraman , documentary filmmaker , film director and professor at the Vienna Film Academy .

Life and work

Wolfgang Thaler grew up in a rural village in the southwestern Austrian state of Carinthia . At first he studied agricultural science and was also a beekeeper. Out of interest in film, he went to the film academy as a guest auditor, and was particularly interested in film production. His wife, who was married in the early 1980s, is a professional film production manager. He applied for admission to the camera class with a photo folder and was accepted.

After completing his film studies, Thaler has been working as a documentary filmmaker and freelance cameraman since 1988. He has also directed nine of his films, for example in 2005 the multi-award-winning documentary film Ants - The Secret World Power, which was made with television production funds .

Since the winter semester 2008/2009 he has been teaching camera work and image design at the Vienna Film Academy.

Awards

In 1999, Thaler was awarded the Austrian TV Prize Romy as Best Cinematographer by the jury . At the Graz Diagonale Festival 2006 he received the award for Best Cinematography for Workingman's Death . In 2009 he was awarded the Marburg Camera Prize. In 2012 he won the Austrian Film Prize for Whores' Glory . From the Association of German Film Critics he was awarded the Prize of the German Film Critics 2016 in the category Best Cinematography for Before the Dawn excellent. In 2017 he and his son Sebastian Thaler received the Diagonale Award for Picture Design (Best Picture Design for Feature Film) for Ugly .
