action

Erik Zabel (2005)

For his film, director Pepe Danquart accompanied all stages of the Tour de France 2003 with three camera teams at the same time and in particular the professional cyclists Erik Zabel and Rolf Aldag , who have been on friendly terms for years. Above all, Danquart shows the human side of the athletes, in which he also reports on the pain and weaknesses of the riders and the media hype surrounding the world's largest cycling event.

Reviews

Critics accused Danquart of a nicely colored, little distant view of cycling, which at that time was already under suspicion of widespread doping. When Zabel, Aldag and other Team Telekom drivers confessed to systematic doping ( Team Telekom doping affair ), the doping scandal Fuentes exposed many prominent cyclists as dopers and the 2006 Tour de France was shaken by serious doping scandals, Danquart distanced himself from his film.

“The 'Tour' is observed with three camera teams, which leads to a visually and musically impressive film that is gripping in many individual observations, but whose proximity to the individual drivers obscures the view of the fascination of the 'Tour de France' somewhat."

“Maybe I just didn't want to believe it. Maybe I was the only one who still believed in it. [Hell Tour] was probably the last monument that was erected for this sport. "
