Semana Santa - The Brotherhood of Death (original title: Semana Santa ; alternative title: Semana Santa - The Secret of Seville ) is an internationally produced thriller from 2002. Directed by Pepe Danquart , the screenplay was written by Roy Mitchell based on a novel by David Hewson .

action

The action takes place in Seville during Holy Week (Spanish: Semana Santa ). Two homosexuals are brutally murdered with short lances like those picadores use in bullfighting. The Madrid police officer Maria Delgado is investigating together with local investigators Quemada and Torillo. When she interrogates Doña Catalina, who found the bodies, a tourist is attacked by a masked person. Shortly after the police are investigating a very mysterious Catholic brotherhood , the chief is murdered with a lance.

Delgado notes that the murders are linked to Catalina's experiences during the Spanish Civil War . Catalina, harassed by the policewoman, says that she was captured by Franco's supporters during the war . As a 14-year-old girl, she was raped by one of the fascists named Alvarez and had to watch her father being tortured to death. He was tied to a vehicle used for bullfighting and then tormented with lances. She killed another rapist with a knife. She then fled and found shelter in another location.

Alvarez survived the civil war unmolested and made a career as a local politician in fascist Spain. Delgado is attacked and injured. The policewoman learns that Catalina had a son who was taken away from her. This man and his half-brothers, Alvarez had numerous sons with various women, founded a kind of secret network. Together these people murder whom they consider to be "enemies" of their father. One of these sons is the police chief himself, who later also murders his other half-brothers and is then shot by Quemada in a showdown. The widowed and melancholy Delgado decides to see life positively again and to take courage.

Reviews

Christopher Null wrote on www.filmcritic.com that the film was "cloudy" and free of thrills. The script seems as if it had been written by a small child or a dog ( "a script that feels like it was written by a small child or possibly a household pet" ) and means that the film is never interesting. The characters are lazy, stupid, inefficient and you can't like them. The bad guys are monotonous stereotypes. One should avoid the film ( “Skip it” ), even if one is a fan of Mira Sorvino.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "a dark thriller with little cumbersome narration, presented in front of a picturesque backdrop using the means of a standard crime novel" . He offers “passable performers” and “dynamic rhythms” who would provide “solid entertainment” .

backgrounds

The film was shot in Seville . Again and again you see sections of processions. It was released direct on DVD and video in some countries such as Argentina and the USA. The German premiere took place in April 2003 on television. It was the last film by actress Alida Valli, who had become world famous through the classic The Third Man .
