action

The married Bruno and the cancer patient Rosa are both 80 and have little perspective left. Then the two meet, fall passionately in love and, despite the unfavorable circumstances, get involved in this relationship. When Bruno's family finds out, his wife Herta and his son Werner put him under massive pressure to end the relationship. Even with Rosa's niece and in the old people's home, the two encounter strong opposition to their relationship. Only Bruno's childhood friend Karl supports her behavior.

When Bruno is faced with the decision, he leaves his wife, moves out of home and is temporarily staying with his daughter. Soon after, Rosa collapses and is taken to the hospital. When she is transferred from there to the nursing home, Bruno and Rosa spontaneously come out of the institution. The two go into hiding temporarily with Karl and make plans for their future together in a new apartment.

But Werner applies for the guardianship of Bruno. Rosa is reported missing and her account is blocked. With the rescue, she is brought back to the nursing home, Bruno offers desperate resistance. He is arrested and shown to the doctor in a psychiatric clinic. Desperate Bruno describes his and Rosa's situation. The psychiatrist takes Bruno's side and helps him bring down the incapacitation process. This means that Bruno can make free decisions and dispose of his finances. Now nothing stands in the way of the shared apartment. Bruno gets Rosa out of the nursing home. The two enjoy their freedom. Bruno takes care of his beloved with devotion, but increasingly isolates himself from the outside world. Housekeeping and care soon overwhelmed them, but pride and fear of being taken to the nursing home prevent them from accepting help. Since Rosa wants to die at home and with dignity, she decides to end her life prematurely. At first Bruno is against it, but then he agrees to support Rosa in her plan. He keeps them quietly and peacefully in the shared apartment and sets off on a (last) trip.

Reviews

Karl Merkatz and Christine Ostermayer awaken this couple's love for life with great enthusiasm. They care for each other like teenagers, laugh a lot, kiss, sleep together and exude a serene dignity in all of this. Unfortunately, the enjoyment of the actors is somewhat clouded by the fact that the film indecisively oscillates back and forth between a romantic comedy and a realistic love drama. "

background

Early 80s is a plea for freedom and self-determination into old age. This film is about the last phase of life and how the great themes of love and death can be dealt with in this phase of life. Bruno and Rosa face these issues and the overwhelming feelings associated with them, and that in a society whose only interest compared to 80-year-olds seems to be to temporarily store them in a quality-assured manner and to dispose of them without interference. Because from care level 1 the person becomes a (care) case and suddenly his dignity is no longer inviolable. Bruno and Rosa fight for their love and for this dignity. They lead a struggle for freedom for autonomy and self-determination and against alienating systems.

The shooting from the early 80s took place in the summer of 2011 in Sankt Pölten and Vienna. The location of the film is the Lower Austrian capital St. Pölten. After the theatrical release on December 30, 2011 and the very successful theatrical use in Austria in the distribution of Stadtkino , it experienced its international festival premiere in the early 80s at the Montreal World Film Festival , where he won the audience award for the most popular film and the award for the best male actor two prizes were considered.
