Sacra rappresentazione

Sacra rappresentazione dei santi Giovanni e Paolo ("Holy Representation of Saints John and Paul"), written by Lorenzo de Medici in the last years of his life

The Sacra rappresentazione (Italian for holy representation ) is a form of spiritual play in late medieval Italian literature . In it, pious folk customs , traditional songs, poetry and music mix in a solemn religious theater. Numerous lavishly costumed actors performed Biblical stories and legends on lavishly equipped stages . Interludes were mostly secular in content and anticipated the Italian comedy .

The classical Sacra rappresentazione was eventually superseded by humanistically influenced dramas and musical dramas, but lives on as part of the so-called "folk culture" - also under this name - in the Mezzogiorno . It is primarily realized as a representation of the Way of the Cross of Jesus ( Via Crucis vivente ). Starting from there, southern Italian immigrants have initiated similar performances in various locations in Germany since around 1980, which are still shown on Good Friday, for example in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt (since 1979), in Bensheim an der Bergstrasse (since 1983), in Saarlouis (since 2000) and in Ulm (since 2004).
