Theeb ( Jordanian - Arabic ذيب, DMG Ḏīb  'Wolf') is a Jordanian-Arabic fictional film released in 2014 by Naji Abu Nowar . It is about the young Bedouin Theeb , who lived in Wadi Rum during the First World War . The film was nominated for various film awards, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film . He won several awards including a British Academy Film Award .

content

Theeb unites several film genres , according to the production manager Yanal Kassay it is a drama that combines aspects of a Western in the Middle East as well as the coming-of-age film . The Neue Zürcher Zeitung used the term " adventure film ".

The film is about two sons of a Howeitat - Sheiks , Hussein and Theeb, it is set in 1916 . The elderly Hussein is paid by Edward, an officer in the British Army , to transport a shipment across the desert to a well near a station on the strategically important Hejaz Railway . Edward is accompanied by Marji, his indigenous translator. Tribal members warn travelers of any robbers who may be in the area. Hussein, who actually looks after his little brother, notices after leaving that he has secretly followed. Theeb then stays with the group to avoid delays.

After arriving at the well, the travelers discover that it has been poisoned by rotting corpses. They notice that strangers are watching them from afar and are fleeing, later they are ambushed: the officer and his translator are shot, and Hussein dies the following night by attacking robbers. Theeb falls into the well, one of the attackers cuts the rope on the water bucket, but Theeb can climb up in the course of the next day. Some time later, Theeb meets an injured man who is riding a camel. The two develop a symbiotic relationship: Theeb takes care of the injuries, the stranger offers a means of transport. Together they set off for the railway, but continue to be suspicious of each other. The stranger was part of the mercenary group that shot Theeb's brother. During a meeting with Arab revolutionaries , the dissimilar couple learns the contents of the originally transported box: Edward was transporting an explosive device that was supposed to destroy the railway station in order to damage the Ottoman Empire . When Theeb observes the stranger selling stolen goods, he decides to shoot him. After the deed is complete, Theeb rides alone into the desert.

production

The film was filmed entirely in Jordan , in the same part of the desert where Lawrence of Arabia was shot. The specific locations were the Arava , the Wadi Rum and the place Daba'a (70 km south of Amman ).

The director Abu Nowar lived with Bedouin for a year, his producer Rupert Lloyd had already lived in Jordan for several years.

occupation

Except for the British actor Jack Fox , Theeb was shot exclusively with actors without prior cinematic knowledge. The decision in favor of amateur actors resulted from the hope of authentic portrayals in front of the camera. In addition, professional actors never spoke the dialect of the tribal members. Due to the conservative social structure with clear gender roles , no female characters could be brought into the film, and no Bedouin women took part in the film.

Visual effects

Students from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco were hired to create the visual effects of the film .

Film awards

Theeb is the first Jordanian film to be nominated for an Oscar . A total of 10 film prizes were awarded by January 2017, with 14 other nominations:
