history

The Alsharq blog (الشرق, DMG aš-šarq , Arabic = "the East") was founded in August 2005 by Christoph Sydow (1985–2020), Christoph Dinkelaker and Robert Chatterjee. The motivation for this was their perception that news about the Near and Middle East is often shortened in German media and presented from a Eurocentric perspective. In November 2008 Alsharq won the user award for “Best German Weblog” at the Best of the Blogs (BoB) Awards from Deutsche Welle . In 2013 the blog was nominated for the Grimme Online Award .

Contributions by dis: orient members appeared in national German-language media, including Die Zeit , taz , Tagesspiegel , Deutschlandfunk , Zeit Online or Spiegel Online .

Dis: orient eV

The online magazine "dis: orient" publishes mainly in German, occasionally also in English. The majority of the articles are analyzes of countries in the region, some of them by members of the editorial team and some of guest authors. Article series occur for certain events, such as B. on the twentieth anniversary of the Oslo Agreement or on the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War . A frequently recurring element are press reviews by the media from the region on the occasion of important events, as well as reviews and guest comments.

Alsharq Reise GmbH

In 2010 the Alsharq team organized a first political study trip to Lebanon . In addition to dealing with historical and cultural backgrounds, the study trips particularly focus on encounters and exchanges with civil society. "In Europe, the region is mainly associated with crises, war and disasters. We want to focus more on the things that are neglected in the reporting," said co-founder Christoph Dinkelaker, describing the Alsharq Reise 2017 travel concept in the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Since 2010 Alsharq has conducted political study trips to the following countries: Lebanon , Israel / Palestinian Territories , Egypt , Jordan , Iran , Oman , Kurdistan-Iraq , Turkey , Myanmar , Tunisia , Bosnia-Herzegovina , and Uzbekistan .
