Specialty Records / Discography
The discography of Specialty Records lists all publications of the Californian record label Specialty Records for their American home market. Country-specific editions in Great Britain , Germany and the Netherlands , which can differ significantly from the American series in terms of plate number, year of publication, cut and completeness , are not recorded . Editions on foreign labels licensed by Specialty are also not taken into account: London Records published in Great Britain, Belgium , Denmark , Germany, the Netherlands, Norway , Italy , Sweden , Japan and South Africa . The German Metronome also published specialty material. Specialty recordings were released in Belgium on Ronnex Records and Moonglow Records , in the Netherlands on Artone Records and in Norway on Decca Records . The label founded by Art Rupe continued as a brand despite being sold to Fantasy Records in 1991 and to Concord Music Group in 2004.
The columns used in the table list the information explained below:
- Number: The record number with the label abbreviation "SP" for Specialty Records. “SPS” stands for stereo albums and “SPCD” for output on compact discs
- Year: The year of the first edition. Many publications have been reissued several times over the years with stickers in the current design.
- Artist: The artist or performers.
- Title: The title of the sound carrier for EPs , albums and CDs.
- Songs: For singles, these are the songs on both sides of the record. A clear assignment of the pages as A and B side is not possible with Specialty Records, as there are no corresponding notes on the stickers. The discography therefore follows the order given by the sources used. These, in turn, are based on the label's advertising in music magazines or on assessments by music journalists based on the respective success. In addition to the title of the release, the EPs also indicate the songs. There is no track list for LPs and CDs.
Singles
Specialty Records began their discography in 1946 with the '78 shellac single. From around 1955, the 45 vinyl single was added in parallel. The last shellac record was Wynona Carr's SP-678 from September 1958. The last 45 single was released in the 1980s.
With Specialty SP-500, the rhythm and blues series started in 1946 , the first five records of which were taken over by Art Rupe's former Jukebox Records and which saw 26 editions by 1948. The count then jumps to SP-300 and starts a series that lasted until 1954 and only had to be interrupted when the original starting number 500 was reached. The 300 series also includes gospel performers who, from 1951 - at the height of the gospel boom - occupied the 800 series, which extended to SP-919 in 1959. It was not until 1971 that this episode was resumed for three years through the reissue of old material until 1973, the last specialty single was released with SP-934. In this episode SP-933 of the Melody Kings was probably the only record with new recordings. Between 1949 and 1953, eighteen country and western singles were released, numbered SP-701 through SP-718. The main line of rhythm and blues starts again immediately after the earliest number block with SP-526 and also follows the change from rhythm and blues to rock 'n' roll . This series lasted until 1960 and until number SP-690, when the label boss Art Rupe temporarily shut down the label as he was personally linked to the Payola scandal. With Little Richard's comeback in 1964, his old label went back into operation and continued with the last count with the SP-691. After only two editions, Rupe was disappointed by the lack of success. Only in 1968 the single production was resumed. Archival material was mainly pressed onto a plate. This series finally ended in the 1980s with the SP-751. The gap in the numbering up to SP-800 of the gospel series was no longer closed.
2012 appeared with Love Charms and Heeby-Jeebies of Larry Williams two recordings from the archives specialty in the design of California's original label under the number JBJ1029. This is an edition on the sub-label Jukebox Jam Series of the British company Jazzman Records and therefore does not belong in the following list.

LPs
The first specialty long play record from 1952 is 10-inch and was given the number SB-100. It wasn't until five years later that Specialty really got into the LP business and made Little Richard's debut under the number SP-100. The record was re-released shortly afterwards on SP-2100, starting a series of 13 albums in mono. The series continued in 1960 with the temporary inactivity of the label. After re-entering the market in 1964, it took until 1968 for a new series to follow up on the old numbering. The indication stereo is misleading because mainly old mono material was delivered to the press shop in processed form.
With SP-5002 a short jazz LP series started in 1957, which did not get beyond three editions in 1960 and a fourth in 1972. The numbering in the 5000 range was then used in the British editions of Specialty Records.

Maxi singles
When disco music was popular, Specialty had several songs from the catalog revised. Lee Silver remixed two Little Richard songs that appeared together on 12-inch maxi single, but were commercially unsuccessful. Four years later the record was re-released as the Specialty 741 in 7-inch format.

CD compilations
Specialty started producing CDs as an independent label in 1989. First, some LPs from the main 2100 series were re-released. The first issues of the The Legends series followed, starting with the number SPCD-7001. Both series continued after the label was sold to Fantasy Records in 1991. For this purpose, the music journalists Billy Vera , Lee Hildebrand and Opal Louis Nations were commissioned with new archive work, so that almost the entire specialty catalog could be re-managed in CD form. As before the sale, Art Rupe's daughter Beverly was in charge of the arts. The CD series continued with SPCD-2168 from the count of the last album series and was continued with nine editions. At the same time, the 7000 "Legends" series was launched, which lasted until 1997. The "Gospel Twofer" series combined two albums on one CD, but only saw five editions. Four extensive box sets complete the Specialty program up to 1994. In 2004, Fantasy Records and the Specialty label became part of the Concord Music Group , which realized further editions on Specialty: The Specialty Profiles CD series was created for the 60th anniversary in 2006, followed by irregular individual issues.
