Guitar Slim - The Things That I Used to Do

The Things That I Used to Do is a blues standard written by Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) in 1953 and released on Specialty Records . The single was produced by the young Ray Charles .

General

The song became one of Specialty Records' biggest hits, although owner Art Rupe feared that the track would only catch on with the rural population of the south , as Guitar Slim was a blues singer. But the song was also played by the R&B radio stations of the north, and so it reached the urban population of the north as well. The piece became a nationwide hit and stayed on the R&B charts for a total of 42 weeks. From January 30th to February 13th, 1954, it was in first place. The success helped Guitar Slim to many new appearances, including at the Apollo Theater in New York.

song

The song was arranged by Ray Charles in the direction of gospel , as Guitar Slim had a less grown-up voice than many blues singers of the time. This also suited the content of the song, which has a more philosophical, religious mood. The song is about being abandoned. Although the singer will never do the things he did again ( The things that I used to do, Lord, I won´t do no more ), his girl leaves him for another man ( .. that you was hit out wit yor other man. ) And so he sends the girl to her mother and goes back to his family himself, because there is nothing more he can do that would satisfy her. ( 'Cause nothing I do that please you, Baby Lord, I just can't get along with you. ).

The song was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame of the Blues Foundation .
