Creole Kings of New Orleans is a label sampler from 1992 that contains 26 partially unreleased recordings from the archives of Specialty Records and Ebb Records . The recordings were made between 1952 and 1958.

Music genre

According to the title, the recordings are imbued with the characteristics of the music of the Creole population of Louisiana . Allmusic assigns the sampler to rhythm and blues and further specifies it as "early R&B, New Orleans R&B [and] soul".

History of origin

Los Angeles independent label Specialty Records has been recording regularly at Cosimo Matassa's J&M studio in New Orleans since Lloyd Price 's hit Lawdy Miss Clawdy . Among the performers, most of whom were accompanied by the studio band , were the city's current R&B greats. Some of the recordings were also made at the Californian headquarters of the label in Universal Records or Master Records in Hollywood . Most of the songs appeared on singles on Specialty and Ebb Records, some recordings, including alternative tracks, went to the label's archives.

After the takeover by Fantasy Records in 1990, Billy Vera was tasked with viewing the master tapes, remixing the most attractive finds and putting them together as a sampler. The transfer from analog to digital technology was done by Gordon Skene, another mastering was done by Kirk Felton at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley , California. Jerry Wexler could be won over for the text part of the booklet .

A second edition with the same concept appeared in 1993 under the title Creole Kings of New Orleans Volume Two .
