Ernie K-Doe - Mother-in-Law

Ernie K-Doe (born February 22, 1936 in New Orleans , Louisiana , † July 5, 2001 there ; actually Ernest Kador, Jr. ) was an American singer.

Live and act

Kador began to sing in a church choir at the age of seven ("Golden Choir Jubilees of New Orleans"). He later joined various gospel choirs .

Ernest Kador sang his first single, Do, Baby Do , in 1955 on the Specialty label . My Love for You followed in 1959 under the name Ernie Kado on Ember Records. In 1959 he switched to the newly founded record label Minit Records in New Orleans as Ernie K-Doe . His first record here was Make You Love Me (# 604) in December 1959. This track was still forgotten, but his second release, Hello My Lover (# 614), sold over 100,000 copies.

His great success was Mother-in-Law / Wanted $ 10,000 Reward (# 623), composed and produced by Allen Toussaint , a humorous song published in February 1961 about the stereotypical problems with mothers-in-law who are apparently sent from Hell. The title alone was an enormous incentive to buy. The song with Benny Spellman's muffled bass voice repeating the title not only brought Minit Records to number one in the R&B charts, but was a valuable crossover success that also made it to the top of the pop charts. It has been sold over a million times.

Together with the music producer Allen Toussaint, other singles such as Te-Ta-Te-Ta-Ta (May 1961) were created, but these could no longer build on the success of the million seller . Even a move to the record label Duke Records in 1967 could not stop K-Does’s decline in popularity.
