Sammy Cahn

Sammy Cahn (born June 18, 1913 in New York City , † January 15, 1993 in Los Angeles , California ; actually Samuel Cohen ) was an American songwriter and musician . He worked with Jimmy Van Heusen and wrote the jazz standard Here’s That Rainy Day with him .

Live and act

The son of Jewish immigrants from Poland was on 18 June 1913 the name Samuel Cohen in the Lower East Side in New York City born.

In 1935 he wrote the classic Rhythm Im My Nurserry Rhyme with Jimmie Lunceford (music) and Don Raye (text) , also for Lunceford Rhythm Is Our Business . In 1938 he was involved in the swing classic Bei mir bist du schoen (original from 1932 by composer Sholom Secunda and lyricist Jacob Jacobs) with Saul Chaplin . 1942 began his collaboration with Jule Styne , in pieces for a number of Broadway - musicals like Glad to Se Ya (1944) or High Button Shoes created (1947). For the film Follow the Boys they wrote the Oscar-nominated song I'll Walk Alone in 1944 . In 1945 they jointly created the later jazz standard I Fall in Love So Easily , and in 1946 the song The Things We Did Last Summer .

Cahn eventually gained fame through his collaboration with songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen in Hollywood in the mid-1950s . You wrote the music for the TV series Our Town in 1955, starring Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra . From there came the song Love and Marriage . In the following years they were Sinatra's favorite songwriting team and also wrote songs for his album Come Fly With Me (1957), such as the title track and the song It's Nice to Go Travelin ' . The Cahn / Van Heusen team wasn't quite as successful on Broadway: The 1965 play Skycraper , written for Julie Harris , flopped; also the Paramount musical Papa's Delicate Condition . Only the pop song Call Me Irresponsible was a hit from it. His last known song was the title Star! .

In the course of his career, Cahn has worked with Jimmie Lunceford , Don Raye , Saul Chaplin and Jule Styne in addition to Van Heusen .

Cahn was married at least twice, from 1945 to Gloria Delson and from 1970 to Virginia Basile; the guitarist Steve Khan is his son. Over the course of his career, he has been nominated for 23 Academy Awards , five Golden Globes and three Emmy awards. He has won an Oscar four times and an Emmy.

Sammy Cahn died on January 15, 1993 at the age of 79 in Los Angeles , California and was buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery .

Cahn wrote the lyrics for Love and Marriage , now known as the theme song for the television series A Terrible Family . The song originally accompanied the television production Our Town and won an Emmy Award in 1956 .
