Doris Day introduced the song in 1948 in her film debut From Romance on the High Seas (directed by Michael Curtiz ) and on record (Columbia 38290). From December 1947, Sarah Vaughan (Musicraft) and Harry James took him on; in the 1950s, versions by Gene Ammons , Hampton Hawes , Tony Scott , Cal Tjader , JJ Johnson , Charlie Mariano , Lurlean Hunter , Jackie McLean , Stu Phillips , Earl Coleman , Don Elliott , Mary Ann McCall , Hazel Scott , Richie Kamuca followed / Bill Holman , Johnny Griffin , Hank Mobley , Max Roach , Lee Konitz , Warne Marsh, and Sonny Stitt .
