Tony Scott
Anthony David Leighton Scott (born June 21, 1944 in North Shields , † August 19, 2012 in Los Angeles , USA ) was a British film director and film producer who mainly shot action films. Including popular films such as Top Gun or The Public Enemy No. 1 . He committed suicide in 2012 .
Life
At the age of 16, Tony Scott played the lead role in his older brother Ridley's first attempt at film , Boy and Bicycle . He completed his education at Leeds College of Arts and at the Royal College of Art in London , where he studied art . He created the short films One Of The Missing and Loving Memory for the British Film Institute . Like his brother, Tony was successful not only as a Hollywood director but also as a commercial for television spots. He won numerous awards from the advertising industry.
In the 1960s, he and his brother founded their own production company, Ridley Scott Associates (RSA). In 1995 the two bought the financially troubled Shepperton Studios to give the British film industry a new boost. At the same time, Tony and his brother Ridley founded the production company Scott Free Productions in Los Angeles in order to produce new films from now on. Among other things, RSA produced the second season of the series The Hire commissioned by BMW with Clive Owen in the lead role.
In 1983 Scott enthusiastically shot his first feature film, previously he had directed a short film in 1969 and 1971, followed by a television film in 1973. Tony Scott mostly made his last films with Denzel Washington in the lead role.
Private life
Scott was married three times. In 1969 he married his first wife, the Oscar-winning television producer Gerry Boldy . The marriage was divorced in 1974. In 1986 he married his second wife, Glynis Sanders. They divorced a year later when it became known about Scott's affair with Brigitte Nielsen , whom he met on the set of Beverly Hills Cop II . Nielsen was married to Sylvester Stallone at the time . On the set of Days of Thunder in 1990, he met film and television actress Donna Wilson , who was 24 years his junior. In 1994 the couple married. The twin sons Frank and Max were born in 2000.
death
At around 12:30 p.m. local time on August 19, 2012, Scott committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the Los Angeles waterfront, San Pedro . Police found contact information in a note in his car parked on the bridge and a suicide note for his family in his office. Testimony showed that he did not hesitate before jumping. His body was found in the water by the port police.
The reasons for Scott's act are obscure. On August 22, spokesman Ed Winters said that Scott's notes did not give a reason for the suicide. On October 22, 2012, the causes of death named were "multiple blunt violent injuries" caused by the impact. Several drugs were also found in his body. A coroner said Scott had no serious previous illnesses. Two years later, however, Ridley Scott stated in an interview that his brother had been diagnosed with cancer before he committed suicide, but the family refused to disclose it so soon after his death.
Former companions like Tom Cruise , Christian Slater , Val Kilmer , Eddie Murphy , Denzel Washington , Gene Hackman , Elijah Wood , Dane Cook , Dwayne Johnson , Stephen Fry , Peter Fonda and Keira Knightley attended Scott's funeral . Tom Cruise said of him that he was a creative visionary whose traces in the film are immeasurable.
The first episode of the television series Coma and the first episode of the fourth season of Good Wife were dedicated to Scott. The film Exodus: Gods and Kings was dedicated to him by his brother Ridley .
