action

The subway "Pelham 123" in New York is ambushed and the occupants of the first car are taken hostage. The hostage-taker leader, who calls himself Ryder , demands a ransom of $ 10 million to be brought to him within an hour. Once the time had expired, he would one every minute delay passengers of subway shoot. The dispatcher Walter Garber , who has been transferred to a criminal offense due to a suspected bribery affair, negotiates with him, but is sent away by his superior when the police arrive. Ryder then shoots the driver and demands that Garber negotiate further. When the subway driver Ramos, who belongs to Ryder's gang , is accidentally shot by a police sniper , Ryder needs a new driver and demands that Garber hand over the ransom.

In the course of the plot it turns out that Ryder, a former securities dealer , wasn't interested in the ransom at all : he had speculated that his terrorist act would cause stock prices to plummet and thus the price of gold to rise. When Ryder's team fled after receiving the money, Garber used a hectic moment to evade the hostage situation and armed pursued the fleeing Ryder. In the end, Ryder forces Garber to shoot him on the Manhattan Bridge , otherwise he would use his gun. The mayor thanks Garber, who then returns home with the purchases his wife had promised. The film ends with a shot of the smiling Garber greeting his dog.

Reviews

“'The Abduction of Pelham 123 Underground' is a straightforward, compact thriller. The scenes of violence are eruptive, the frenzied tracking shots through tunnels and streets unfold a labyrinthine suction, and some action scenes, such as the driving amok of the driverless subway, seem even less spectacular than in the original. The editing and image alienation effects, which Tony Scott likes to overuse, don't bother this time either, as they are entirely in the service of the tension dramaturgy and underline the feverish tone of the story. The new work does not match the angular charm of the original, but Walter Matthau would still be happy. "

"Scott's new version is technically impressive, but in terms of content and atmosphere, it does not match the original."

- Carsten Baumgardt : filmstarts.de

"Much was not done wrong in Tony Scott's The Abduction of the Pelham 123 Underground , but nothing really right either."

"Remake of the film ' Stop the Death Ride of the U-Bahn 123 ' [...], which sacrifices the ironic lining of the action drama to a hectic modernization, in which nuances are rare, but technical virtuosity and breathless material battles are all the more dominant."

Trivia

Part of the film was shot in the New York subway system while it was still in operation. A few meters farther on, normal rail operations continued, which made the filming particularly difficult. "I've never been so afraid for my men," remarked director Tony Scott.
