action

The young and impetuous racing driver Cole Trickle takes part in the car races organized by NASCAR . He is supported by his crew chief Harry Hogge, who designs a tailor-made racing machine for him.

After an accident with his arch rival Rowdy Burns, Cole and Rowdy end up in the hospital with Dr. Claire Lewicki and falls in love with her. Their relationship falls into a crisis when Claire throws at the head of Cole, who is suffering from fantasies of omnipotence, that he is an infantile egomaniac and thus throws the racing driver off the track for a short time. His place in the team is occupied by Russ Wheeler. After an argument, Cole has to look for a new sponsor. Despite difficulties, thanks to the help of the empathetic Crew Chief Harry, he manages to get back to the races and win some, including the Daytona 500 . His relationship with Lewicki experiences another crisis. But Cole gives in, and his friendship with Rowdy Burns also relaxes the situation. Claire Lewicki accompanies him to the race for the first time and celebrates victory with him.

background

The film was shot in Phoenix, Arizona , Florida , North Carolina , South Carolina , Tennessee, and Utah . Its production amounted to an estimated 60 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 165.9 million worldwide, including approximately $ 82.7 million in United States theaters.

The soundtrack comes from Hans Zimmer , who got support from Jeff Beck during the recording . As with Top Gun , this soundtrack also featured successful single releases, such as Guns N 'Roses with the Bob Dylan song Knocking on Heavens Door and the singer Maria McKee with Show Me Heaven . The title song Last Note of Freedom was sung by Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale .

Tom Cruise set a lap record on the Phoenix International Raceway in the "Driver without a license" class during the filming process. Cruise is dubbed in this film by his standard voice actor at the time, Stephan Schwartz . Cary Elwes (Russ Wheeler), on the other hand, is voiced by Cruise's later standard speaker Patrick Winczewski .

The American journalist and anti-Scientology blogger Tony Ortega claimed in 2015 that Cruise saw Kidman in the film The Silence of Death and convinced producers Bruckheimer and Simpson to give her the lead role as a neurosurgeon , even though she was too young for it at the age of 22 . Cruise and Kidman began an affair on the set, and after Cruises' divorce from Mimi Rogers , the two married in late 1990.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on June 27, 1990 that many elements of the film were known from the earlier films with Tom Cruise such as Top Gun , The Color of Money and Cocktail . These would include: The character played by Cruise, his senior mentor, an attractive woman, and an opponent. These elements would form a "predictable construction" in days of thunder . However, Ebert praised the portrayals of Robert Duvall and Michael Rooker.

In the Washington Post on June 29, 1990, Desson Howe mocked the film's “triumphant” outcome, the “macho” MTV- style imagery, and the music intended for young audiences. He praised Robert Towne's humorous screenplay, which made Nicole Kidman say to Tom Cruise, "You're an infantile egomaniac." Shortly afterwards, Kidman and Cruise marry.

"The clichéd action story about pride and hard-fought male friendship serves exclusively as a playground for exaggerated manliness mania", judged the lexicon of the international film , which continued: "Loud technology and glossy photography conceal the lack of cinematic innovation and creativity." Prisma named the film a "pathetic racing driver spectacle". The conclusion of the cinema magazine Cinema was simply: "Flat, but fast."

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Special Effects category. He won the BMI Film & TV Award for the music.
