action

The young Brian Flanagan moves to New York after his service in the US Army to study economics. In addition to studying economics, he works in a bar that employs the experienced bartender Douglas Coughlin. They both quickly become friends, and Douglas teaches his friend cynical bon mots , which he calls "Coughlin's Laws". Douglas and Brian stage the mixing of the drinks and become cult figures for their guests. The manager of an exclusive discotheque recruits them. There they celebrate cocktail mixing, and Brian entertains the audience with weird poems. Douglas and Brian are considering opening a bar, which would mean a $ 75,000 investment. Brian starts an affair with Coral that gives him the idea of making money in Jamaica , where bartenders have higher incomes.

Douglas bets Brian that Coral will find a new lover in a few days. Shortly afterwards he seduces Coral. Brian feels betrayed by his friend and there is a fight between the two, whereupon Brian resigns.

Brian travels to Jamaica and takes a job in a bar. Here he meets Jordan Mooney, with whom he starts a relationship. Douglas, who has meanwhile married the wealthy Kerry, appears as a guest. He asks Brian to make a wager, claiming that Brian will not be able to do the same thing, namely to tow a rich, older woman. Brian accepts the bet and takes rich Bonnie home with him. Jordan notices this and, deeply affected, immediately returns to New York. Brian, who had initially only planned a one-night stand, stays with Bonnie and also goes back to New York with her.

Their relationship does not work, however, because the older and successful Bonnie sees Brian as a gigolo and not a serious partner. After the breakup, Brian goes to Jordan, whom he happened to see as a waitress in a pub, and apologizes to her. Jordan admits that she loved him and that he is pregnant. Brian explains his affair by saying that he was too cowardly for a serious relationship. It turns out that she has rich parents but wants to remain as independent as possible.

Jordan's father wants to prevent Brian from getting on his daughter again and offers him money to get him out of Jordan's life. Brian, however, does not take the money. He meets Douglas, who speculated on his wife's fortune on the stock exchange , which he has so far kept from her. While Brian takes Kerry home and declines her offer for a sexual adventure, Douglas commits suicide. Brian, shaken by his friend's death, visits Jordan and persuades them to leave their parents and move in with him. His uncle lends him money and Brian opens his own bar called "Cocktails & Dreams". He marries Jordan, who confides in him that she is expecting twins.
