Laurence George Luckinbill (born November 21, 1934 in Fort Smith , Arkansas ) is an American actor , writer and theater director .

life and career

Luckinbill studied at the University of Arkansas and the Catholic University of America in the 1950s . He then took acting lessons from Uta Hagen . In the early 1960s, he made his theater debut on New York Broadway in Robert Bolt's play A Man For All Seasons . Luckinbill played several times on Broadway in the following decades , most recently in 1999 as Mr. Schultz in the musical Cabaret . Since the 1980s he has also made a name for himself through largely self-written one-man pieces in which he embodied historical personalities such as Theodore Roosevelt , Ernest Hemingway , Clarence Darrow and Lyndon B. Johnson .

In the late 1960s, he took on the potentially dangerous role of a homosexual in the controversial play The Boys in the Band , as he was friends with the author Mart Crowley . In 1970 he made his cinema debut in the film adaptation of the same name by William Friedkin . Luckinbill then became known to American television audiences as Glenn Garth Gregory in the series The Delphi Bureau (1972 to 1973) and Richard Arnold in the miniseries Ike (1979). He played the murder victim in the Columbo episode Murder Self- Directed (1978) and appeared twice in the series Murder is Her Hobby . He also played Spock's half-brother Sybok in the movie Star Trek V: On the Edge of the Universe .

From 1965 until the divorce in 1976 he was married to the actress Robin Strasser (* 1945), the couple have two children. He has been married to the actress Lucie Arnaz (* 1950) since 1980 , and Luckinbill has three other children from this marriage. In 1993, the couple produced a documentary about Lucie's famous parents, the actor couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz . They received an Emmy Award for this documentary entitled Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie . The couple now live in Palm Springs, California .
