Schinaria

Schinaria ( Greek Σχοινάρια ) is a bay with a sandy beach on the south coast of the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete . It is located in the municipality of Agios Vasilios in the Rethymno regional district , about 3.5 kilometers southeast of Plakias , the seat of the Finikas municipality .

Geographical location

Schinaria is a side bay of the larger Damnoni Bay . It is seen from Damnoni to the southeast behind the Bay of Ammoudi and is separated from it by a rock formation that can be bypassed on a narrow hiking trail to the east. About 2.5 kilometers northeast of Schinaria there is the village of Lefkogia , with which the bay is connected by an asphalt road.

Along the road from Lefkogia to Schinaria , the section west of the 433-meter-high mountain of Timeos Stavros , there is a small irrigation canal at an altitude of 140 meters . It is from the river Megalopotamos fed, on the palm beach of Preveli opens, and provides some olive - plantations above Ammoudi and Schinaria with water. Further east of the bay, about 3.5 kilometers away, is the Preveli monastery , to which, however, there is no direct road connection.

description

Northern part of the beach

The approximately 150 meters long and up to 60 meters wide beach of Schinaria consists of sand mixed with small pebbles. To the right and left of the access road, two streams lead towards the bay, but they do not carry water all year round, and when they do, they usually seep into the sea before the mouth. As a result, two wetlands have formed in front of the beach , which are covered with reeds .

Southern section of the beach

The bay of Schinaria is framed by the rocky coast. The beach leads flat into the water. In the season, loungers and parasols are loaned out there, and in the off-season, sometimes you can swim naked . As in the neighboring bay of Ammoudi , divers can be found almost every day on the beach of Schinaria , who use it as access to the sea. The rock formations of the coast continue in the water.

Behind the beach there is a three-story, semicircular concrete building of a restaurant called "Libyan Sea", which does not seem to be finished. It's the only building right on the bay. In front of it, towards the sea, between the restaurant and the wetland of the streams, there is a small parking lot, around which palm trees have been planted. A hotel building in the upper area of Schinaria was closed some time ago.

Access

Branch in Lefkogia

After Schinaria a marked paved access road, which is about starts in the middle of the village Lefkogia and goes past the village cemetery leads. The approximately three kilometer long road is very narrow and winding. It first leads along the foot of the mountain of Timeos Stavros , before turning downhill towards the sea after about 2/3 of the way.

Otherwise, Schinaria can only be reached on hiking trails along the sea. There is no landing stage. Even the excursion boats that operate along the coast, which are equipped with piers for the palm beach of Preveli, do not call at the bay of Schinaria .
