Seeking Justice (Original title: Seeking Justice ) is an American action - thriller by Roger Donaldson from 2011 with Nicolas Cage in the lead role.

action

The film opens with a man who is obviously giving an interview to a journalist. He declares that he could no longer be sure of his life if he brought the machinations of his organization to light. Shortly afterwards, this man is pushed off the roof of a parking garage in an off-road vehicle and dies in the process.

The high school -teacher Will Gerard leads a happy relationship with his wife Laura New Orleans . One evening, Laura is beaten up and raped by a stranger on the way home from her job. At the hospital, Will and his best friend Jimmy, who also works at Rampart High School, are waiting for news of his wife's health. Will is approached by a stranger who introduces himself to him as "Simon". Simon tells him that he belongs to a secret association that has committed itself to vigilante justice against rapists, murderers, pedophiles, etc. If Will so wishes, the members could "take care" of the perpetrator - without any legal proceedings. After that, Will only owed them small favors every now and then. When asked, it concerns things like switching off a surveillance camera at a certain time or the like. After initial hesitation, Will accepts the suggestion, and Laura's rapist is killed.

Six months later, Will receives an assignment from Simon to kill the alleged child pornographer Alan Marsh. Then the organization was even with him, and he was left alone. He was assured that the surveillance cameras at the crime scene were off and that it would look like suicide. After the organization pressures him and breaks into his home, he decides to carry out the murder. When he meets Marsh, he attacks Will. In the scuffle that followed, Marsh fell over a railing without Will's help and fell into his death. Will is arrested because one of the surveillance cameras was not off and incriminating him.

To his surprise, Will learns that Marsh was not a criminal but an investigative journalist. Lieutenant Durgan, a police officer who is part of the organization, lets him escape. Will is now on the run from the police and the organization. He finds out that Marsh was on to the organization. Will contacts his wife Laura and warns them. Although Laura is lured into a car by members of the organization on an excuse, she eventually escapes.

After further research, during which he even penetrated the editorial office of Marsh's newspaper, the New Orleans Post , Will discovered evidence. In an old garage, Will finds an interview on a CD that Marsh conducted with a member of the organization, which shows that the organization, under Simon's leadership, has gotten out of hand. Will realizes that even his friend Jimmy is implicated in the machinations of the organization. Jimmy, whose brother was murdered and for whom the organization had found the perpetrator, now has to pay in return.

Meanwhile, Jimmy tries to find out Laura's whereabouts. Finally he visits Trudy, who tells him where he is. Jimmy takes Laura under his control. Will contacts Simon and lures him into a stadium. The alias Simon hides Eugene Cook, one of the police officers who tried to pin Will on the murder of journalist Marsh. But instead of giving him the relief video in exchange with the CD, Simon trumps with Laura as a hostage. Simon had Jimmy take them to a derelict mall. After Simon receives the CD from Will, he wants to have him and Laura disposed of.

In a dramatic showdown, Simon kills Jimmy, who no longer wants to take part in the unjust game. In the turmoil, Laura is able to free herself and take possession of a firearm. Will is threatened with a revolver in a duel with Simon. Laura appears and shoots Simon.

Lieutenant Durgan suggests making the case look like Jimmy and Simon shot each other in an argument. Finally, the video shows up proving that Will was not to blame for Marsh's death. Eventually, Will hands over evidence to a journalist who wants to continue Marsh's research. He says goodbye to Will with the words: "The hungry bird attacks", the code of the organization. You don't know whose side he's on.

Reviews

“Largely more exciting, if not always conclusively told thriller about the fine line between despair, revenge, vigilante justice and short-circuiting. Convincing Guy Pearce in the role of the ice-cold mastermind. "

“All in all, Donaldson's new film is a solid, well-crafted thriller that can be entertaining. Average. However, it is not enough for an extraordinary flick that will be remembered, the elements of surprise are simply missing. "
