history
The area was first settled in 1851 when Mormons settled there. Farmers named the place in 1868 "Pleasant Green". Copper was found in the mountains in the early 1900s . The place then changed from an agricultural region to an industrial area. The Utah Copper Company (later Kennecott Copper Corporation ) built a copper smelter in 1906 and named it “Magna”, based on the Latin meaning “large” . In order to avoid confusion of the place "Pleasant Green" with the place "Pleasant Grove", also located in Utah, the community decided to rename the place after the name of the copper smelter in "Magna". Due to the flourishing industry, the population grew, with many immigrants from Eastern Europe. Further industrial plants were built or expanded, which suffered brief setbacks during the time of the Depression , but grew again after 1960. The worldwide increasing demand for copper led in the 1970s to a further sharp increase in mining activity and, with it, the population. In 1974 the Kennecott Copper Corporation built the Kennecott Smokestack , a 370-meter-high chimney from a copper smelter, which is one of the tallest chimneys in the world and is still a symbol of the city today. Between 1960 and 2000 the population grew from 8900 to 23,000.
