Michael Rooker (born April 6, 1955 in Jasper , Alabama ) is an American actor who mainly appears in roles as an antagonist .

Career

Rooker moved from his hometown to Chicago in the mid-1960s , where he trained as an actor at the Goodman School of Drama in 1982. He quickly became a sought-after theater actor in Chicago and has appeared in plays such as Union Boys , The Crack Walker and The Hostage .

Since the mid-1980s, extensive film and television activities followed, in which he predominantly portrays villains. For example, he embodied Arnold Schwarzenegger's opponent in The 6th Day . He played a serial killer in his first movie Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer from 1986. Due to release problems with regard to the scenes of violence in the film, it was not released until three years after its premiere.

From 2010 he played in the zombie series The Walking Dead the role of Merle Dixon , the brother of Daryl Dixon , played by Norman Reedus . On March 10, 2012, Rooker was on the radio show "Delamorte's Dungeon of Deadly Delights" and talked about his directorial debut, the horror film Pennhurst . In 2014, he starred as space criminal Yondu Udonta in the Marvel hit film Guardians of the Galaxy . He took on this role again in the 2017 sequel . He has a long-standing collaboration with director James Gunn , which began in 2006 with Slither .

In the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II , released in 2012 , he gave the character Mike Harper his voice and appearance.

Rooker has appeared in more than 100 film and television productions since 1986.

In the game Call of Duty: Black Ops , Rooker appears with the Escalation DLC as a playable character in survival mode. He also lends his voice to a character in the action horror game "Lollipop Chainsaw".

He has been working regularly with director James Gunn since the film Slither . The collaboration was with Super - Shut Up, Crime! and the video game Lollipop Chainsaw . He also plays in Gunn's superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its sequel (2017). Gunn calls Rooker his favorite actor.

Rooker has a daughter.
