Bram Stoker: Dark World ( Shadow Builder ) is an American - Canadian horror film released in 1998 . Directed by Jamie Dixon and written by Michael Stokes based on the story The Shadow Builder by Bram Stoker .

action

The film begins with Father Vassey - a priest specially trained for such tasks - fighting a group of heretics around Archbishop Quinlan who practice black magic according to the "compendium infernus". There is an exchange of fire in which all group members are killed by Vassey. Lambert, who had given the group a hair sample, some blood and a photo of a little boy for money, but is killed and hit by a black shadow; the shadow escapes.

Known as the Shadow Builder , this demon was summoned by the Catholic Archbishop Quinlan and wants to destroy the world. Since the gate between the world of darkness and the world of light can be opened briefly during the upcoming solar eclipse, if a pure soul without sin is sacrificed, the Shadow Builder needs an innocent person for his work. He finds this in the twelve-year-old boy Chris Hatcher, an orphan who was stigmatized during his baptism . These stigmata identify him as a pure soul, free from original sin, from which a great teacher or saint could become. Chris (note the first name "Chris", which is also an abbreviation of "Christ"), however, lives ignorant of all this with his aunt Jenny Hatcher in the small town of Grand River. The family has had nothing to do with the Church since the strange occurrences of Chris's baptism.

Since Father Vassey finds out that Lambert was in the small town of Grand River shortly before his death, he goes there. He finds out that Chris is a biological son of Lambert. The demon also comes to Grand River in search of the child from the photo, kills various people here and seizes their souls in order to strengthen his power. The small town is getting more and more out of joint with the growing hostility and viciousness. When the Shadow Builder is strong enough through six conquered souls, he kidnaps Chris and takes him to the local church. Here the Shadow Builder tries to recite the creation story backwards and to sacrifice Chris in order to destroy humanity and the light, while the moon slowly moves in front of the sun. At the last moment, however, Father Vassey succeeds in the fact that he stands protectively in front of the boys on the altar (an allusion to the biblical situation of Abraham and Issak is possible) and as a sinful soul surrenders himself to death, the plan of the Shadow Thwart builders .

Reviews

Nathan Shumate wrote in Cold Fusion Video Reviews that the " ghostly " tension built up in the first half of the film dried up in the second half. The film is a poor copy of God's Army - The Final Battle . It is just a " dark shadow of a better film ".

The magazine TV direkt 19/2007 wrote that the film cannot be compared to Bram Stoker's Dracula - in a negative sense.

Awards

In 1998 the film won a prize at the Mostra Internazionale del Film de Fantascienza e del Fantastico di Roma ( Fantafestival ) festival for its special effects .

backgrounds
