God's Army - The last battle (Original title: The Prophecy ) is a thriller from 1995, in which it is about the age-old fight between apostate and godly angels. The film is best known for Christopher Walken's appearance as the fallen Archangel Gabriel . In Germany, the film was distributed directly on VHS from June 7, 1996 .

action

Aeons after the first angel ( Lucifer ) rebelled against God and was thrown into the abysses of hell by the godly angels , discontent spreads again among the messengers of heaven: Gabriel, one of the archangels , envies people the love and care of the Lord and begins another campaign against God with many faithful. Bloody battles rage in the heavenly spheres. The young aspirant to the priesthood Thomas Daggett has visions of this conflict and can therefore not perform the ordination as a priest.

Years go by. Gabriel goes in search of the soul of Colonel Hawthorne, a perverted ex-officer who raged like a wild beast among the locals in the Korean War and who recently died in order to conquer the sky with the help of his soul. Before he finds him, however, another winged man, Simon, has already removed the soul and planted it in the little Indian girl Mary. However, Gabriel does not give up and in his further search for the soul does not only kill Simon. He finds support in this from people whom he “fetches back” shortly after their death and lets them work for him as a kind of zombie .

Finding the dead angel Uziel , one of Gabriel's faithful, calls Thomas Daggett on the scene. He left the church behind and is now a homicide investigator . He sets out for the desert and meets Katherine Henley, Mary's teacher. She has already met Gabriel and is very worried about her little protégé: Mary is sick and mumbles confused things about the massacre of Koreans.

When Gabriel goes on the offensive, Thomas and Katherine flee with Mary to a remote Indian reservation , where someone else interferes in the fight: Lucifer - better known as the devil - appears to Katherine and announces that one Gabriel victory will turn heaven into a second Hell would transform and he won't allow such a thing. The final duel takes place in which Lucifer defeats Gabriel. Meanwhile, Mary is healed through an exorcism.

Reviews

"A horror thriller adorned with Gregorian chants and biblical sayings that tries to cover up both its confused logic and the boredom of the staging with blatant shock scenes."

God's Army - The final battle was double its cost. Christopher Walken's portrayal of Gabriel was particularly praised, as was the brief appearance by Viggo Mortensen in the role of the devil.
