Gregory C. Widen (born November 30, 1958 in Los Angeles County ) is an American screenwriter and film director .

Life

Widen was still a film student at UCLA when he sold the script for the 1986 fantasy film Highlander . The film became a huge commercial success.

In the early 1980s, Widen had worked as a firefighter in Southern California for three years . He witnessed how a friend was killed in a smoke gas explosion (English "backdraft"). This experience became the basis for his script for the 1991 film Backdraft , a drama among firefighters. He also wrote the script for the sequel Backdraft 2 , published in 2019 .

Widen's only directorial work so far is the supernatural thriller God's Army ( The Prophecy , 1995). The film, for which Widen also wrote the script, is about the battle of the angels for supremacy in heaven. The film was nominated for the Saturn Award of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for Best Horror nominated the year.
