The Godoy Cruz Department is located in the center of the Mendoza Province in western Argentina and is one of the province's 18 administrative units . Together with the Departamentos Capital , Las Heras , Guaymallén , Luján de Cuyo and Maipú , it forms the Gran Mendoza agglomeration . It is also the most densely populated department in the province.

It borders in the north on the Departamentos Capital and Guaymallén , in the east on the Departamento Maipú , in the south on the Departamento Luján de Cuyo and in the west on the Departamento Las Heras .

The capital of the department Godoy Cruz is the same Godoy Cruz . Both are named after the Argentine politician and businessman Tomás Godoy Cruz (1791-1852).

According to INDEC estimates, the population increased from 182,977 inhabitants (2001) to 232,036 inhabitants in 2005.

economy

The Godoy Cruz department combines around 36 percent of the economic power of the province of Mendoza. The determining factor is trade (especially the car trade) and the service sector. A few wineries have also settled here, but there are no vineyards. The Mendoza Casino is located on the departmental boundary between Godoy Cruz and Mendoza (city).

Sports

Godoy Cruz is home to the football club Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba , which became the first club in the province of Mendoza in the Primera División in 2006 .
