history

The first inhabitants of the area of La Paz were the Huarpes , who called their region Yopacto and who had the caciken Corocorto as head .

The Spaniards reached the area under the command of Capitán Don Sancho de Medrano . To fulfill their mission, they built an adobe chapel, which was consecrated to San José and was replaced in the 1760s by a small church that today guards the image of Nuestra Señora de La Paz . Every year on January 24th, a religious festival takes place in her honor with a procession around the plaza of the old town.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the trade with regional products to the littoral had increased considerably. The Posta del Desaguadero and Posta San José de Corocorto rest stops were of great importance on the long journey . Therefore, the Comandante Amigorena , under the government of Rafael de Sobremonte , founded the place San José de Corocorto on December 24, 1791 , which is now called Villa Antigua .

The Villa de La Paz was founded on August 4th, 1850 when the province was ruled by Alejo Mallea .
