The department of San Martín is located in the northern center of the province of Mendoza in western Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered by the Lavalle department to the north and east, the Santa Rosa department to the southeast, the Junín department to the south and the Maipú department to the west .
The capital of the department of San Martín is the eponymous San Martín .
The department and capital are named after General José de San Martín , who led the Argentine troops to independence.
