The department of Las Heras is located in the northwest of the province of Mendoza in western Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province. It was named after Juan Gregorio de Las Heras (1780–1866), a general from the Argentine War of Independence .
It borders the province of San Juan to the north, the Lavalle department to the east, the Capital , Godoy Cruz and Luján de Cuyo departments to the south , and Chile to the west .

geography
The Andes form a natural border between Argentina and Chile . They cover a substantial part of the western side of the department. The Aconcagua , the highest mountain in America at 6961 m, is located on the territory of the Department of Las Heras.
