Uspallata

Uspallata is a small Argentine town in the Las Heras department in the Mendoza province .

The small town is located in the valley of the Arroyo Uspallata north of its confluence with the Río Mendoza between the sub and main cordillera of the Andes at an altitude of 1750 to 2040 meters, three mountain ranges - Cerro Aspero (3,357 meters - east), Cerro Penitentes (4351 meters - southwest) and Cerro Tigre (5675 meters - northwest) determine the panorama.

In the village meet the Ruta Nacional 149, which leads north to the border of the province of San Juan and from there on via Barreal and Calingasta to Las Flores , and the Ruta Provicial 52 on the Ruta Nacional 7 . The provincial capital Mendoza is about 105 kilometers away via the winding route, formerly known as Ruta Nacional 7, Ruta Provincial 52 , and about 90 kilometers to the border with Chile at the Túnel del Cristo Redentor .

history

It can be assumed that the oasis of Arroyo Uspallata and Arroyo San Alberto was already settled in pre-colonial times, the place first appeared in the light of history in 1817 when Argentine troops under the command of Juan Gregorio de Las Heras made their way through the valley of the Río Mendoza to conquer the Andes as part of the liberation of Chile.

In connection with the construction of the Transandes Railway between Los Andes and Mendoza, Uspallata was connected to the Argentine railway network on February 22nd, 1891 with the opening of the section to Mendoza; the connection to Los Andes in Chile was not established until 1910 .

The 2001 census showed that Uspallata, including the La Fundición and Las Bóvedas settlements, had 3,437 inhabitants, an increase of 505 (17.2%) compared to the 1991 census.

In addition to agriculture , mainly the cultivation of vegetables , tourism and transport are of great importance.

Due to its location, Uspallata is the supply center for tourists who travel on to Aconcagua and Parque Provincial Aconcagua . On site, the ruins and the Museo Las Bóvedas deserve attention.

Others

The city is namesake for the Uspallata glacier in Antarctica.
