The Túnel del Cristo Redentor is one of the most important road links between Chile and Argentina . The two-lane tunnel, opened in 1980, which connects the towns of Las Cuevas and Portillo , bypasses the Paso de la Cumbre . The top of the tunnel is at 3,209 meters above sea level, the length is 3,080 meters, 1,564 meters on Chilean and 1,516 meters on Argentine territory.

In winter, the tunnel is often closed due to the slippery road surface and avalanches .

Alternative routes

The vulnerability of this important transit link to weather has led to the consideration of alternative tunnel projects:

  • Túnel Juan Pablo II between Horcones (Argentina) and Juncal (Chile) - height 2,250 meters to 2,720 meters, length about 20 kilometers
  • Túnel Las Leñas between El Sosneado (Argentina) and Machali (Chile) - altitude 2,050 meters, length about 13 kilometers
