Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is an American science fiction - action film , that of Marvel Studios was produced. It is a continuation of the film Guardians of the Galaxy from 2014. The film was released on April 27, 2017 in German-speaking cinemas.

action

The film takes place two months after the Guardians of the Galaxy events . The Guardians have adopted on the home planet of the Sovereign, a self-perfected race, the order to protect their sacred energy cells from energy-hungry monsters, the Abilisken. In exchange they receive Gamora's sister Nebula, who was captured by the sovereigns and for whom a bounty is offered. You successfully complete the job, but Rocket steals some of the power cells, unnecessarily . When the sovereigns notice the theft, they open the hunt for the Guardians for this sacrilege. To escape the Sovereigns' drone fleet, the Guardians dare a desperate space jump to the next planet. But shortly before the jump they witness how a mysterious newcomer destroys the drone fleet with a single blow.

After the Guardians have made a successful emergency landing, they get company from their unexpected rescuers: the alien ego and its protégé, the empath mantis. To Peter's surprise, Ego calls himself his father, and to convince him he takes Peter, Gamora and Drax to his planet, while Rocket and Baby Groot stay behind to repair the wrecked ship and take care of Nebula. Arrived on his planet, Ego explains to the initially skeptical Peter that he is a higher cosmic being, a so-called Celestial, who drifted through space as a spiritual essence until his power enabled him to use a planet as a shell and finally a human body to create as an avatar . In search of a meaning for his existence and other life, Ego roamed the universe until he finally came to earth and fell in love with Peter's mother. But his nature as a cosmic being prevented a permanent stay with his wife. When she was finally dying, he sent the Ravager Yondu Udonta to earth to fetch his son. Yondu broke the agreement and kept Peter as a member of his Ravager team. After Ego opened his own legacy to Peter with the cosmic forces, Peter finally forgives his father for his long absence.

It has since been declared that Yondu has been expelled from the Association of Cosmic Ravagers for trafficking children (a violation of the Ravagers' code). He is hired by Ayesha, the ruling high priestess of the Sovereigns, to track down the Guardians and bring them to her for punishment. The Ravagers track down Rocket and Groot and, with Nebula's help, capture them. But when Yondu refuses to hand over Peter and his comrades, part of his crew mutinies under the rebellious Taserface, puts him down and locks him up with Rocket. In their cell, the two prisoners join forces and, with the help of Groot and Kraglin, Yondu's last loyal henchman, break out after the mutineers have killed his other followers. They take revenge on the mutineers and flee with part of the Ravager ship. But before the ship explodes, Taserface gives Yondu's flight route to Ayesha as a final act of revenge, who then sends out another combat fleet.

Nebula, who left the Ravagers after Rockets and Yondu's capture to take revenge on Gamora, tracks down her sister on Ego's planet and attacks her. In the end, however, she cannot bring herself to kill her as her only remaining family. Then, with Mantis' help, the two sisters and Drax learn of a terrible secret. As Ego also tells his son, he sees the meaning of his existence in covering all the worlds of the universe - including the earth - with his essence, destroying all life on them and reshaping them according to his ideas. But since there are limits to even his strength for such a task, he tried to reproduce with female representatives of every race he discovered. So he wanted to pass on his powers to his genetic descendants, who should then support him in his endeavors. Yondu brought the children to ego in due course, but since none of them had inherited its powers, they were rejected by ego and killed. Only with Peter he had successfully passed on his powers, but Yondu, who knew about the fate of the other children, took Peter in to save him from a similar end. Complicating matters was that Ego had fallen genuinely in love with Peter's mother; and in order not to leave emotional ties, he implanted the tumor in her that ultimately killed her.

When Peter hears this news, he rebels against Ego, who then tries to forcibly tap Peter's latent powers and thus enforce his devastating plan anyway. The other Guardians, Yondu, Kraglin, Nebula and Mantis arrive to free Peter and together they fight their way into the planetary core, which contains Ego's essence. Before they can destroy them, the sovereigns' combat fleet arrives, which gives Ego time to defend itself against the Guardians. Rocket sends Groot through the protective shell of Ego's essence with a timed explosive device to destroy it. In order to save his friends, Peter sets free his own powers and can hold up ego until the explosive device detonates, destroying ego's essence and thus drying up Peter's powers. Yondu sacrifices his life to save Peter from the collapsing planet into space, and is buried in space with honor by the Guardians and all the Ravagers. Peter gets on Yondus funeral of Kraglin to replace his destroyed by ego Walkman a Zune - MP3 player , Kraglin turn the repaired Rocket flying arrow Yondus. Nebula reconciles with Gamora before separating from her in order to seek revenge on Thanos .

In a post-credit scene (five in total, including a scene in which the Star-Lord himself has to grapple with the joys of fatherhood and the growing Groot) it is shown that Ayesha has not given up her thirst for revenge on the Guardians despite the defeat has and is now breeding a new, further developed sovereign called " Adam ", who is supposed to retaliate for them.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The reason for the release states: “The film is told with elements typical of the genre, contains opulent images, weird characters and numerous fairy-tale-like elements as well as many fast-paced action scenes, whereby humor repeatedly loosens up. It is easy to distinguish between good and bad. While under 12-year-olds can be overwhelmed by the battle scenes and the threat scenarios, 12-year-olds are able to process them. "

Reviews

The film won over 83 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . Karsten Scholz praised four things in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in his review for the website buffed.de: 1.) The technical perfection, 2.) the new peoples and locations, 3.) the higher number of gags in comparison to the predecessor and 4.) "a motley hodgepodge of Easter eggs and cameo appearances, which thanks to the fantastic soundtrack again appeals to the retro fan in us". In his conclusion he complains about weaknesses, but these are marginal. He writes about the film in his conclusion: “The film has only a few weaknesses. Some gags that do not want to ignite, but also the villain, who threatens the entire galaxy with his machinations, but typical for Marvel, remains rather pale. The bottom line is that neither plays a role. All the other facets of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are too good for that, the flick rocks the screen too much for the entire duration. "

In a video review, Christoph Kellerbach from the Rheinische Post said that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has become "absolutely fantastic space fun", "which does a lot of things the same, but also does many things differently." The characters are the big ones Strength of James Gunn's film. Supplemented by a fantastic look, also in 3D, and a wonderful catchy soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, just like its predecessor, is "excellent space comic fun" in the opinion of Kellerbach. In his review for the website robots-and-dragons.de, Hannes Könitzer rated the three primary storylines of the film differently: While the story about Peter Quill and his father is highly entertaining and the story about Rocket is the right mix of fun and Show tension, the one around Gamora and Nebula is the weakest of the three storylines. Könnitzer praised the humor and the music tracks from the 1970s and 80s . In his conclusion, he judged: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is just as much fun as Part 1. Those who enjoyed spending time with the sympathetic hero troop in the first film should also get their money's worth in the sequel. The story not only scores with humor, but also offers surprising depth on an emotional level. A third part is welcome to join. "

Dimitry Halley particularly praises the characters in his review for GameStar . Guardians of the Galaxy 2 scores above all with its masterfully staged and incredibly personable characters. In this way, the film not only manages to transport the entire group around Star Lord and Co. into the hearts of the audience, but also to give each character at least one believable inner conflict. “The film doesn't just warm up the meeting from the first part, but actually continues their relationships (as it should be for a sequel). Or to put it another way: where Guardians of the Galaxy 1 leads the troop through the stormy phase of getting to know each other, the relationship really starts in Part Two. ”He concluded that the Guardians Star Lord, Rocket, Drax and Co. are so unbelievable on screen work well that the comics lose out in his eyes. That was the case with the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and that also applies to Part Two. Because the "film builds a crew of characters who steal the show from the Avengers and the Justice League in terms of personality, charm and humor."

Vienna Online said that the film scores with great attention to detail and a well-balanced cast that works together perfectly. Conclusion: “'Vol. 2 'shines less as an independent album than as a successful compilation with the' Greatest Hits' from the thigh-thumping sci-fi universe - and at the end it has a promise ready: to be continued! "

But the film was not well received by all critics. Sascha Westphal writes in the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung , in contrast to the first Guardians of the Galaxy , in which the individual elements have combined wonderfully into an immensely thrilling space adventure, this time the whole thing is less than the sum of the individual parts. For long stretches of the film, director James Gunn is content with simply filling in gaps in the background of his characters, according to Westphal, concentrating above all on Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt . When he encounters his biological father, an initially sentimental family reunification develops into one of the film's central conflicts.

Martin Schwickert from the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung stated a "rather slack-comic group dynamic in the hero team". The figures would "rest on their characterizations from Part 1" and seem frozen "in their weird existence". Awarding two out of five points, he judged: “'Vol. 2 'is a tiring re-infusion in 137 minutes and shows once again that humor and comedy can rarely be successfully re-cultivated in a franchise. ”Daniel Benedict of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung noticed a self-irony that is unique even in the nonchalant Marvel universe. Action and effects in this always very funny "Guardians" continuation are basically their own parody. His conclusion, like that of his colleague from the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, was negative: “For two hours, the Guardians and their fans celebrate a funky party, at the end of which even the ashes of cremated heroes float through space like Holi powder. Confetti in cosmic nothing: A beautiful picture for the jubilant "Anything goes" of this film, which is both at the same time in every scene: overfull, but also empty. "

Gross profit

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is around $ 864 million, around 90 million more than the previous Guardians of the Galaxy film , which grossed $ 773 million. As a result, the film ranks 6th among the most successful films of 2017 and 75th (as of August 8, 2020) among the world's most successful films of all time . In Germany, the film recorded 2,516,305 visitors, making it 9th among the most successful films of the year.

continuation

In March 2017, James Gunn announced that a sequel was already being worked on. However , he is not yet clear about his own involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 . On April 17, 2017, James Gunn announced on Facebook that he would again both direct and write the script for the sequel. On January 13, 2018, he announced the cinema release for 2020. After Disney split from Gunn in July 2018 due to old controversial tweets, the project was put on hold for an indefinite period.
