Marvel's Daredevil , also known as Daredevil , is an American television series by Drew Goddard , which is based on the characters from the Marvel comic book of the same name . It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is the first of four Netflix series that eventually lead to a crossover series called Marvel's The Defenders . Season one showrunner is Steven S. DeKnight .
Charlie Cox plays the leading role of Matt Murdock / Daredevil, a lawyer by day who fights crime at night. The first season shows him at the beginning of his crime fight, during the rise of Wilson Fisk . The second season deals with the appearance of the Punisher , Electra and the fight against the organization "Die Hand".
All 13 episodes of the first season were released simultaneously on April 10, 2015 by Netflix via streaming in both the USA and German-speaking countries. Just eleven days later, Netflix announced the production of a second season. The second season was released on March 18, 2016 in all Netflix territories, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In July 2016, Netflix extended the series for a third season and also announced the production of a spin-off series under the name Marvel's The Punisher . Season three was released on Netflix on October 19, 2018.
In November 2018, Netflix discontinued the series after three seasons.

At the age of nine, young New Yorker Matt Murdock became blind in an accident caused by chemicals. In doing so, however, his other senses were extremely sharpened, which means he can easily hear the heartbeat of a person several meters away, for example, or is able to smell perfume through several walls. At that time he was living in New York's Hell's Kitchen district in Manhattan with his father Jack, who as a prize boxer was repeatedly drawn into dubious betting shops that ultimately cost him his life. Later Matt was taught martial arts by the blind "Stick" - who has similarly sharp senses as he - and then studied law.
At the beginning of the series action, the now grown-up Matt opens a modest law firm with his best friend Foggy. At the same time, he begins to use his special skills against injustice and crime in Hell's Kitchen. He quickly finds himself confronted with a well-organized association of several criminal syndicates that are involved in human and drug trafficking and, through bribery, have police and politics under their control. Wilson Fisk, the leader of one of the criminal syndicates, gradually usurped the power in Hell's Kitchen and knocked out his competitors one by one. While Matt's partner Foggy and her secretary Karen try to legally hunt down Fisk along with reporter Ben Urich, Matt takes the law into his own hands and uses his special skills to fight Fisk and the other criminal syndicates.

After Fisk's conviction, the members of three criminal organizations are brutally killed. It turns out that these acts were all perpetrated by Frank Castle, who is soon to be called " Punisher " by the media . The three groups are responsible for the deaths of Castle's family. After the police arrest him with Daredevil's help, Foggy and Matt take over his defense when Karen discovers that Castle shouldn't get a fair trial. While Foggy and Karen work hard on Castle's defense, Matt is distracted by his ex-girlfriend, Elektra . Like him, she was trained as a fighter by Stick as a child. Together they fight against an ancient and mysterious Asian association called "The Hand".
Tensions grow between Foggy and Matt as Matt's double life has a negative impact on their work together. After spectacularly losing the Punisher trial because Castle surprisingly insists on the witness stand that he is fully responsible for his actions, Foggy and Matt liquidate their law firm. Through the mediation of an old friend, Foggy is employed in Jeri Hogarth's office; Karen, who continues to investigate Castles deeds during and after the trial, is staying with the New York Bulletin with the help of Ben Urich's former boss Mitchell Ellison .
In prison, Castle meets Wilson Fisk, who uses the Punisher to secure a position of power in prison. In return, Castle receives information about the man responsible for the death of Castle's family. Fisk lets Castle escape from prison and take revenge. Elektra and Matt continue to fight - soon supported by Stick - against "Die Hand". Their head is Nobu, believed dead; this declares Elektra the "Black Sky", the ultimate weapon of the "hand". However, Elektra does not want to be used by the "hand" and sacrifices herself in the fight for Matt.

- Matt Murdock / Daredevil
A blind lawyer who has had supernaturally keen senses since an accident. He uses his skills to fight crime in his home, Hell's Kitchen. At first only camouflaged with a mask, from the end of the first season under the name Daredevil in his characteristic red suit.
- Wilson Fisk / Kingpin
A powerful businessman, and a leader of the Hell's Kitchens crime syndicates. At the beginning he kept a low profile, but ended up being a philanthropist in public . He is convinced that his machinations will ultimately improve Hell's Kitchen, even if he first has to tear the city down. He is in a relationship with the art dealer Vanessa Marianna.
- Foggy Nelson
Matt Murdock's best friend and his partner in their joint law firm. He later learns of Matt's double life. This eventually causes tension between the two, which is why they close their joint law firm and Nelson finds a job with Jeri Hogarth .
- Karen Page
Matt and Foggy's dedicated secretary. She's worked for them ever since she was charged with the murder of a coworker, and Matt and Foggy successfully defended her. She and her colleague happened to come across Fisk's criminal machinations and were supposed to be silenced by him. She continues to work actively to expose Fisk's criminal activities. Even after his arrest, she continues to investigate other cases in addition to her work, always in close cooperation with the local newspaper. After the law firm Nelson & Murdock was dissolved , she started working for the newspaper as a reporter.

An experienced, committed investigative journalist who wants to uncover Fisk's machinations and is therefore ultimately killed by him.

The right hand man and close confidante of Fisk. He is shot dead by Karen Page in season one.

- Leland Owlsley
The accountant for the Hell's Kitchen crime syndicates. After he and Gao commissioned an assassination attempt on Vanessa, because she is said to have distracted Fisk, he is killed by Fisk.
- Madame Gao
Leader of the Triad in Hell's Kitchen. She controls heroin production in the city. She is involved in an assassination attempt on Vanessa with Owlsley, and disappears before Fisk finds out. After Fisk's fall, she continues her criminal machinations in Hell's Kitchen .
- Vladimir Ranskahov
Together with his brother Anatoly leader of the Russian mafia in Hell's Kitchen. He is responsible for logistics in drug and human trafficking. He is betrayed by Fisk and dies like his brother in the first season.
- Nobu
Leader of the Yakuza in Hell's Kitchen. He supposedly dies in a fight with Daredevil, but later returns as the leader of the secret organization "Die Hand".
- Stick
Matt's blind former mentor and martial arts teacher. Unlike Matt, he has no qualms about killing people, which is why the two often clash. He leads the secret organization The Chaste , which fights "Die Hand".
- Marlene Vistain
She is the mother of Wilson Fisk. After Karen Page and Ben Urich track her down and extract incriminating information about Fisk, Fisk kills Urich.
- Frank Castle / Punisher
A decorated war veteran. After his family were accidentally caught in the crossfire and killed in a failed drug deal between several criminal organizations that turned into a shootout, he takes revenge by brutally murdering all members of said criminal organizations.
- Elektra Natchios
Like Matt, she was trained to be a fighter by Stick. Like Stick, she doesn't share Matt's moral standards and has no qualms about killing people. Sometimes she even enjoys it. As a child, Stick entrusted her to a Greek diplomat to protect her from "The Hand" she believes is The Black Sky and believes Elektra is destined to be her leader.

The first season of Daredevil was received very positively by the critics. The film review site Rotten Tomatoes recorded 41 reviews, 98 percent of which were positive and it was given an average rating of 8.2 out of 10 points. At Metacritic , the first season got a score of 75 percent based on 22 reviews.
Andreas Borcholte calls "the noir drama freed from the mainstream pressure of the mass network" on Spiegel.de "Marvel's most original and best TV company to date", even if the dialogues and the staging are lacking the finishing touches. Anna Meinecke from n-tv .de calls the series “damn brutal”, but the creators of the show always manage to calm down its format at the right time. According to her, the Netflix format shines with "finely drawn characters" and, unlike many other television shows, you can feel the chemistry between the actors. In the evening paper , the series - which is about as gloomy as the apartment of the blind main character - is praised for its "simply beautifully choreographed fistfights". Mark Harrison called D'Onofrios Fisk / Kingpin in his detailed analysis of this character for Den of Geek summarized as "the best portrayal of a Marvel villain".
The reception of the second season was less good than the first, but it was still positive. Of 27 recorded reviews on Rotten Tomatoes , 74 percent were positive; the average rating was 7 out of 10 possible points. At Metacritic , the second season got a score of 68 percent based on 13 reviews.
