The Punisher is a 1989 Australian film based on a Marvel comic book called Punisher . Further films are from 2004 ( The Punisher ) and 2008 ( Punisher: War Zone ).
action
Five years after the murder of his family, the police officer Frank Castle, who was believed to be dead, is active underground as the "Punisher". He lives in the sewer and wages a one-man war on organized crime; his only friend is the homeless alcoholic Shake. This keeps the punisher informed about the activities of the mafia. Since the Punisher killed 125 criminals of the Italian Mafia within five years, the Mafia is very weak. This calls the yakuza , led by Lady Tanaka, on the scene. The Japanese gangsters want to bring the American underworld under their control and for this reason kidnap the Mafia children and demand a ransom .
Shake persuades the Punisher to save the children, who, regardless of their parents' reaction, are at risk of fate in slavery. He manages to save most of the children, but the son of Mafia leader Gianni Franco is taken to the Yakuza headquarters in New York. The punisher is arrested by the police but freed by Franco. Franco forces the Punisher to work with him to free his son and prevent the Japanese crime from gaining a foothold in America. If he refuses, Franco's old friend Berkowitz would be shot.
Franco and the Punisher, with Shake's help, break into the Yakuza's headquarters and kill their members. On the top floor there is a fight between Tanaka's daughter and the Punisher, in the course of which he breaks her neck. Meanwhile, Lady Tanaka takes Franco's son hostage and forces Franco to shoot himself. As Franco is about to pull the trigger, the Punisher jumps into the room and kills Tanaka with one of his knives. When Franco has his son back, he tries to kill the Punisher, but is shot by him after a duel. When the police arrive, the Punisher disappears and warns Franco's son not to follow in his father's footsteps.
Reviews
“Extremely brutal action film based on an American comic strip that equates tension with non-stop killing orgies; an equally bloodthirsty and boring work. "
“Legendary trash after the Marvel comics. A policeman believed dead (Dolph Lundgren) incognito avenges the murder of his family and mows down so many bad boys that everyone loses track of them. - In 2004 there was also a remake with Thomas Jane and John Travolta . "
backgrounds
The Punisher appears in this film without his identification mark, the skull on his chest. Only a throwing knife decorated with a skull indicates the symbol.
The film was initially only shown in a cut FSK 18 version, which was still indexed. There is also an even stronger FSK 16 version, which is again freely available. In May 2015 the film was removed from the index. A subsequent re-examination of the uncut version by the FSK resulted in an age rating from 16 years.
Further films
In 2004 the film The Punisher with Thomas Jane and John Travolta in the leading roles came into the cinemas. In contrast to the Lundgren version, this film was a success, grossing a total of $ 115 million, of which $ 55 million was at the box office, the rest from DVD sales. In addition, the reviews were better. The film was released in full on DVD and video with the JK seal, but was later indexed. Only a shortened version was shown in the cinema. In 2008, Punisher: War Zone was another film adaptation in which Ray Stevenson played the leading role. The film flopped in the USA and was released directly on DVD in Germany . The character of the punisher appeared in the second season of the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil in 2016. From 2017 to 2019, a stand-alone Netflix series called Marvel's The Punisher ran . As in the Daredevil series, Jon Bernthal took on the role of the punisher .
