Steven S. DeKnight (* in Millville , New Jersey ) is an American screenwriter , television producer, and television director . He is best known for his work on the television series Smallville , Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel . He also worked as a consulting producer for the television series Dollhouse by Joss Whedon . DeKnight is the creator, lead writer, and co- executive producer of the star series Spartacus and its prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena . His first feature film, Pacific Rim: Uprising , was released in 2018 .
