Pacific Rim: Uprising is a science fiction film by Steven S. DeKnight that was released in German cinemas on March 22, 2018. It is the sequel to the 2013 film Pacific Rim by Guillermo del Toro , who was only involved as a screenwriter and producer.

action

In the year 2035, ten years after the invasion by the Kaijū from a foreign dimension could be averted, the former hunter pilot Jake Pentecost made a living from stealing hunter parts and selling them on the black market. He is captured together with fifteen-year-old hunter-loving Amara Namani. His adoptive sister, Mako Mori, persuades Jake to return to the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC) as an instructor while Amara becomes a recruit there.

In China, Jake starts training hunter cadets with his former co-pilot Nate Lambert. The fighter program is threatened by Shao Corporation's new drone program, which produces fighter drones developed by Shao Liwen and Dr. Newton 'Newt' Geiszler. Mako is due to report to a PPDC council meeting in Sydney but is killed by renegade hunter Obsidian Fury . Their death causes the PPDC Council to approve and deploy the drones.

Shortly before her death, Mako had provided the location of a disused hunter production facility in Siberia . Jake and Nate travel there in Gipsy Avenger , but Obsidian Fury destroys the complex and engages them in another battle. When it is destroyed, they discover that Obsidian Fury was controlled by a kaiju brain that is of earthly origin.

When the drones reach their respective locations, they are taken over by cloned kaiju brains that have been secretly mounted on board. The kaiju hunter hybrids attack all hunter locations in the Pacific at the same time, inflicting heavy losses on the PPDC forces and incapacitating almost all hunters. Dr. Hermann Gottlieb and Newt try to deactivate the drones. In the process, Hermann discovers that his former colleague Newt was behind the attack. His thoughts were taken over by the aliens when he and Gottlieb established a mind connection to a brain fragment of a kaijū during the events ten years ago . Newt now orders the Kaiju hunter hybrids to open multiple interdimensional portals in the Pacific . Although Shao is able to destroy the drones and close the bridge, three kaiju have already made it to Tokyo . The PPDC team realizes that the aliens want to erupt the Fuji volcano with the blood of the Kaijus, in order to distribute toxic gas into the atmosphere and wipe out all life on earth .

The cadets are mobilized, Gottlieb and Shao repair four PPDC fighters. First of all, the hunters can ward off the danger posed by the three Kaijus. But when the Kaijus are merged by Newt with robot parasites to a "Mega-Kaiju", Gipsy Avenger remains as the only operational hunter. Jake and Amara, who replaces the injured Nate, steer him against the mega kaiju. Gipsy is shot into the atmosphere on schedule, crashes back on the mega-kaiju and kills him. Newt tries to escape, but is knocked down and captured by Nate.

production

The scriptwriter Emily Carmichael at the premiere of the film

Guillermo del Toro , who directed the previous film Pacific Rim , announced early on that he had no interest in showing the beginnings of the Kaijū invasion, but rather was interested in the fate of the earth after the monsters were driven out show, but also explain more about the origins of these monsters. He also announced that the two films are very different in their tenor. With Pacific Rim, Del Toro had brought an American version of the kaijū genre, which is extremely popular in Japan, to the cinema and presented a charming, if not perfect, robotic beating orgy with many peculiarities that distinguish him as a filmmaker.

The sequel was ultimately directed by Steven S. DeKnight , and del Toro will only act as one of the five scriptwriters and producer of the film. The score was composed by Lorne Balfe . The soundtrack for the film comprises 25 pieces of music, contains not only the film music but also songs by Wizkid , DJ Shadow and Anderson Paak , was released on March 23, 2018 as a download and on April 6, 2018 by Milan Records on CD.

Actor Charlie Day took on the role of genetic researcher Dr. Newton Geiszler, as well as Burn Gorman that of his colleague Dr. Hermann Gottlieb and the Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi that of the fighter pilot Mako Mori. John Boyega took on the role of Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost, who died in the previous film and was played here by Idris Elba . The American Cailee Spaeny took on a major film role for the first time with the cadet Amara Namani. Scott Eastwood plays Nate Lambert, Adria Arjona plays Jules, and Daniel Feuerriegel plays Lieutenant Allan Gronetti. Levi Meaden can be seen as Ilya and Marisa Lamonica in the role of Dignitary. The film, whose predecessor was particularly successful in China, also uses a number of Chinese actors, including Tian Jing for the role of Liwen Shao, Lily Ji for the role of Mei Lin and Jin Zhang for the role of Marshal Quan. Young Chinese actors like Chen Zitong also received an engagement.

After filming in the Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane was finished, it was continued in China on March 8, 2017. A first trailer for the film was presented at the Comic Con in San Diego in July 2017.

The film was released in German cinemas on March 22, 2018. The following day, Pacific Rim: Uprising hit US and Chinese cinemas. The film celebrated its world premiere on March 12, 2018 in Beijing.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “The film contains numerous visually stunning action scenes in which the robots fight against the monsters. However, these are within a framework that does not overwhelm children from the age of 12. Viewers of this age are able to view the action scenes in the context of the completely unreal story and to process them appropriately. Violence against people or killing are not shown. Excessive demands can therefore be ruled out. "

Reviews

Anne Jerratsch Robots & Dragons says about the characters in Pacific Rim: Uprising : “With John Boyega DeKnight has found a worthy replacement for Idris Elba . The usual conflict in which the son has to follow in the footsteps of the father, which is all too big, in order to complete his destiny is certainly not new - but that doesn't matter. Boyega actually turns out to be an excellent choice for the role of the somewhat grumpy popular figure Jake Pentecost. ”Jerratsch also highlights the acting performance of the newcomer Cailee Spaeny , the tech- savvy heroine Amara much more than just the annoying female sidekick, who may only save or must be kissed, and thankfully there are no signs of a superfluous love story: "For some time now, strong, independent and quick-witted female characters have appeared to prove themselves in the action genre - a thoroughly gratifying development." Jerratsch sums up, Pacific Rim: Uprising is the proof that action films with giant robots can actually be fun, and the likeable characters, the thoroughly successful camera work and the impressive action made for an entertaining two hours. The fact that the all-too-well-known genre rules in terms of dramaturgy and visual language are also being strained is refreshing, says Jerratsch.

Philipp Schwarz from Spiegel Online thinks that Guillermo del Toro's demands, which he places on his successor, consist of a creative security, and Steven S. DeKnight cannot come close to this security , since the action scenes are less a clear sequence of stage wins and setbacks. because some confusing accumulated moments of destruction. Even worse is that the film does not develop a feeling for its creatures and does not savor their visual charms, says Schwarz: “In its best moments, DeKnights film seems to accept that it can never do justice to its legacy. Pacific Rim: Uprising then works like a game with the elements taken over from its predecessor - a game that wants nothing other than to keep these elements alive. "

Gross profit

Production costs of around US $ 150 million are offset by worldwide revenues from screenings of US $ 288.2 million. As a result, the film is ranked 10th among the most successful films of 2018 . So far, the film has recorded 379,341 visitors in Germany.
