history

The Ugarit-Verlag was founded on July 13, 1988 by Manfried Dietrich and Oswald Loretz as a civil law society for the purpose of publishing academic books. It started with the series “Treatises on the literature of Old Syria-Palestine (and Mesopotamia)” (ALASP (M)), with the series “Ugaritian Biblical Literature” (UBL) being added in the same year. In 1992 the series “Ancient Studies of the Middle East” (AVO) was founded and, after the death of Alfred Rupp, the publications “Mitteilungen für Anthropologie und Religionsgeschichte” (MARG) and “Research on Anthropology and Religious History” (FARG) as well as the publisher's yearbook “ Homo et Religio ”, Saarbrücken, taken over. In 1997 the editors withdrew the series “Alter Orient und Altes Testament” (AOAT) and the yearbook “Ugarit-Forschungen” (UF) from the publishers Butzon & Bercker and Neukirchener and integrated these publications into the offer of Ugarit-Verlag. Due to the growing number of employees, it was necessary to hire a lecturer and other assistants.

On July 2nd, 2012 the Ugarit-Verlag GbR was taken over by Thomas Richard Kämmerer and since then has been continued together with Manfried Dietrich as Ugarit-Verlag - Buch- und Medienhandel GmbH. Important series such as Egypt and Old Testament (ÄAT) and Wiener Offene Orientalistik (WOO) were taken over in 2015 and the Karum - Emporion - Forum (KEF) and Archaeological Research of Sudan (ARS) series were re-established in 2016/2017. Since 2020, Ugarit-Verlag has also published the series Münchner Ägyptologische Studien (MÄS) and the series Chinese Studies of Early Civilizations (CSEC).
