Marvel's Cloak & Dagger , also known as Cloak & Dagger , is an American television series based on the characters Cloak and Dagger from Marvel and set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The US premiere took place from June 2018 to May 2019 on the television channel Freeform . In German-speaking countries, Amazon secured the rights to the series and published it on Prime Video .

production

At San Diego Comic-Con International 2011, it was announced that a series about the Marvel heroes Cloak & Dagger was in development. The series was supposed to be broadcast on ABC Family (later Freeform ) and the location was to be relocated from New York from the comics to New Orleans . A little later, Joe Pokaski was hired as the show runner of the series.

Joe Pokaski (2018)

At the end of January 2017, Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph were cast in the leading roles that gave the title. Pokaski said that he had already noticed the two characters in the comics. Then when Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, it was like their characters were jumping out of the pages. He and Marvel are very excited to see what these young and talented actors will bring to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Holt and Joseph would hit the core of the characters, and Pokaski was proud to present them to the audience.

In February 2017, Freeform announced that Andrea Roth , Gloria Reuben , JD Evermore , Miles Mussenden , Carl Lundstedt and James Saito would star in supporting roles. While Mussenden's character was announced as Michael Johnson , but later renamed Otis Johnson , the character played by Saito of Dr. Bernard Sanjo is not featured in the series. In addition, Emma Lahana announced in January 2018 that she was part of the series.

Filming of the pilot began in New Orleans on February 8, 2017 and ended on February 24. A first trailer for this episode was released on April 19, 2017. The remaining episodes of the first season were filmed from July to November 2017. A total of 82 days of shooting took place on a budget of 42 million US dollars , of which 11.2 million went directly to the state of Louisiana . Among other things, the film was shot at many real locations. For example, St. Theresa of Avila Church was recreated by taking photos of three smaller churches. The dark energy effects of Tyrone are all computer-animated, whereby one wanted to represent the movement of the individual particles in a physically correct manner, taking into account gravity and wind. In contrast, Tandys used daggers and “light bombs” equipped with LEDs as templates, which were later digitally processed. Almost two and a half months before the planned release, on March 20, 2018, another trailer for the entire season was released.

The 10-part first season was broadcast on Freeform from June 7 to August 2, 2018 . According to official information, 7.3 million viewers saw the series premiere within the first three days, which was a record for Freeform. In German-speaking countries, the individual episodes of the first season were published on Prime Video from June 8 to August 3, 2018 .

In July 2018, Freeform prematurely extended the series by a second season, which also includes ten episodes. Pokaski also stated that he could envision future crossovers with other Marvel series. In an interview with Collider , he also revealed that there were concrete plans for five seasons. In an announcement video for the second season, the words "Season 2 will be Mayhem" were presented, which is a reference to Brigid O'Reilly played by Emma Lahana , who becomes the character Mayhem in the comics . According to Pokaski, the exciting thing for the production team was that they already knew in season one that O'Reilly , who started out as a friend , would become the villain Mayhem and that they therefore held back with her. He also added that Mayhem was someone we would all like to be if we didn't have to face the consequences. Niceole Levy , a writer on the series, said a big topic in season two is human trafficking . The aim was to draw attention to the fact that this problem affects not only women with a migration background , but also many young women in the USA, regardless of their social status or ethnicity, and that anyone could become a victim of it. Pokaski commented on the second season that it was much more dynamic than the previous one. In this, the main characters focus on the question “Who am I?”, While they are now “thrown straight into the fire” and have to ask themselves who they want to be. At Tandy, a great focus was placed on the relationship with her mother, for which a few small things on the sets would have been changed. Andrea Roth added that Tandy and her mother go to therapy sessions together to deal with the problems from the past and within their relationship. The relationship between the two is better because they understand their pain and wounds.

In preparation for the second season, which is more physical than the first, Lahana, according to his own statement, completed weapons and Krav-Maga training. Filming for the second season finally began again in New Orleans in mid-October 2018 and ended at the end of March 2019. A first teaser for the second season was published on February 14, 2019, a trailer followed five days later. A month later, Brooklyn McLinn , Dilshad Vadsaria and Cecilia Leal were announced as new supporting actors . Finally, the first episode of the second season premiered at WonderCon 2019. The release began on April 4 with a double episode on Freeform and ended on May 30, 2019. In German-speaking countries, the second season was released from April 5 to May 31, 2019 on Prime Video . For the episode Die Geisel , Aubrey Joseph wrote and sang the song Numb . Olivia Holt sang the Styx song Come Sail Away in the finale of the first season . After the season finale was broadcast, Pokaski confirmed that the basis for a romantic relationship between the two main characters now exists. In addition, the end of the season, in which the two leave town together, would offer the opportunity to realize a future crossover with the series Marvel's Runaways , which Pokaski was not averse to.

In early August 2019, it was officially confirmed that Holt and Joseph would appear as Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson in the third season of Marvel's Runaways . On October 24, 2019, however, Freeform announced that the series would be discontinued after two seasons.

Around eight months after the events with Roxxon, Tandy lives with her mother again and visits a self-help group with her to overcome the past with her father. They also get to know Mikayla, who was apparently the victim of domestic violence. Tandy follows her to her house and leaves Mikayla's friend Jeremy on the wall with the message that he should leave his girlfriend alone. Tyrone, however, is still on the run, as he is still believed to be the murderer of Officer Fuchs, and lives in the old church of Tandy. Since he feels lonely, he secretly observes his parents, Evita and Tandy in their everyday lives and begins to steal drugs from gangs so that the addicts can't get any more and the dealers can't make any money. O'Reilly, who is now back on duty, is not very enthusiastic about this action, as she fears that Tyrone could cause such a gang war. But when he continues despite all warnings and Tandy finally has to come to his aid, an argument breaks out, as both have kept silent about their respective actions. However, to her displeasure, Tandy has to realize that her intervention has caused Mikayla to realize how soft he is inside and that he needs her. Tyrone, on the other hand, has to realize that his actions actually caused a gang war. So he reconciles with Tandy and both want to collect evidence of their criminality during a conversation to mediate between the heads of the gangs. However, all those present are killed by an unknown person.

After Tandy and Tyrone find the gang members' bodies, they call O'Reilly for reinforcements, who orders them to leave. Tandy then takes part in another group session in which she asks Mikayla to finally leave Jeremy, whereupon she flees and has not been found since then. Tandy met Andre Deschaine, the head of the self-help facility, who proposed the theory that Mikayla could have sought refuge in a house known to the group. On the way to this one, they both see a group of people looking for missing children. Andre reveals that because of the poor conditions the missing people come from and their skin color, no authority would be interested in them. Tyrone, who recognized a symbol that one of the dead had drawn on the ground, seeks out Chantelle, who advises him to pray in order to find his answers. He is teleported to the kidnapped and drugged Mikayla for a few moments. Together with Evita, who has put aside her anger that Tyrone did not contact her for eight months and did not tell her about his powers, he learns how to teleport with other people. When he visits O'Reilly, he finds her tied up. She reveals to him that Mayhem, a more confident likeness of her, is responsible and has taken over the investigation into the murdered gang members. Tandy, who has looked into the memories of the hospitalized Mikayla and thus found out the whereabouts of the kidnappers, meets Mayhem on the spot, believing it is O'Reilly. After the two of them arrest the kidnapper together, Mayhem kills him. Tyrone and O'Reilly then teleport together to Tandy's whereabouts, where O'Reilly and Mayhem face each other in front of Tyrone and Tandy.

As a result, the three go to Mayhem's apartment and learn of their plans there. The four of them meet in a strip club, where Mayhem reveals that she knows where other kidnapped girls are. But Tyrone, Tandy and O'Reilly come too late, because Mayhem has already freed the kidnapping victims, but simply left them on the street, which is why Tandy and Tyrone argue about the legitimacy of Mayhem's actions. Through Tyrone's ability to see people's fears, the trio eventually figured out the girls' actual destination. There Tandy distracts the kidnappers, while Tyrone can free more missing people. When Chantelle reveals to him that he is about to become a loa , he shows her his gift. Mayhem is also in the same place, who, by playing various records, puts Tyrone on the trail of the ambulances with which the girls are kidnapped. So he can find the motel where he meets Tandy. Del has already shown that Lia lied to her about the girls she and Tyrone rescued, because they are not dead. When Del realizes with the help of the Internet that there are still people who are looking for and missing her, she draws new hope, whereby Tandy regains her skills. Together with Tyrone, she can overpower Lia and her allies. But when Mayhem in the shadow world begins to destroy the records, Tyrone suddenly threatens to dissolve into shadows.

Tandy enlists Evita and O'Reilly so that they can work together to save Tyrone's life. A first attempt by Evita to summon Papa Legba , who lives in the shadowy world , so that he can release Tyrone, leads nowhere. Tandy and O'Reilly then decide to enter the shadow world again and thus bring Tyrone back from this intermediate world. There Tandy meets Baron Samedi , a loa and ruler of the dead, who makes her the offer to win the game "D'Spayre" in order to be able to safely return to the real world. So Tandy and the present Tyrone dive into the game and fight their way to the final boss, Andre Deschaine. But Tandy gives up early because she doesn't see the point behind the action. Meanwhile, O'Reilly meets Mayhem. When the two get closer, O'Reilly realizes that she is not strong enough herself and transfers control of herself to Mayhem. In the meantime, Evita realized through her aunt that she had to become a mambo herself in order to save Tyrone. When she performs the rituals and then, as part of her destiny, marries the loa Baron Samedi, the latter is delighted with Evita's sacrifice and lets Tyrone, Tandy and Mayhem leave the shadowy world. The latter then announced that it would track down Andre. He has already relieved himself from Lia on his escape. When Tandy later visits her mother's house, she discovers that she had a relapse. Evita also finds her dead aunt.

In the meantime, Adina seeks up Father Delgado so that he can hand over the information received from Connors to the police in order to exonerate her son, without inquiries about the source. Delgado refuses at first, because he has actually turned his back on the church, but then agrees on the condition that Adina first confess. She reveals to him that she killed Connors after he was no longer of use to her.

Eight years before the Tyrone and Tandy events, Andre Deschaine was a jazz trumpeter who had to retire due to migraines . The night the Roxxon drilling rig exploded, he tried to kill himself, but survived the fall and came to in the hospital. There he met the doctor Lia, whom he was able to convince to leave her unloved job behind and join him. He discovered his skills in the shadowy world for the first time and then founded the self-help facility in order to enrich himself from the desperation of others.

With Andre still on the run in the present, Tandy and Tyrone decide to join Mayhem's search. The women can use the police to locate the Lia left behind by Andre, as they hope to get information from her, but they have to find out that Lia was left by Andre without real consciousness. So Tandy and Tyrone enter her memories together, through which they learn that Andre wants to try to play the Blue Note , to finally become a loa, to be able to take control of the city and ultimately everyone in To put Lia's state. Since Lia is no longer of any use to Mayhem, she tries to shoot the unconscious. But Tandy believes in the role of victim Lias, which leads to a fight between Tandy and Mayhem, as a result of which the latter disappears. Meanwhile, Tyrone was able to organize a meeting of the two warring gangs through Solomon. He forces its leader to stop selling drugs to human traffickers and pimps in the future and to reveal Andre's whereabouts to him. So he and Tandy can track down the fugitive, but discover that he has already started to bring the residents of New Orleans, including Mikayla and Tandy's mother, under his control. Tandy can supposedly kill Andre in the real world, but his transformation to god is completed in the shadow world. Afterwards, everyone already under his influence disappears without a trace and the Blue Note sounds over the whole city.

When Mina investigates Mayhem, it turns out that she is now a hybrid of her two personalities. Just as Mina explains that Brigid has both Mayhem's anger and Brigid's empathy, the scientist disappears without a trace. As many other residents of New Orleans disappear like them, Tyrone and Tandy seek help from Evita. This cannot answer them how they can stop Andre, but tells them his current whereabouts in the shadowy world. Tyrone opens a portal that is kept open by a burning candle guarded by Evita. Since Andre sends creatures from the shadowy world that should extinguish the candle, Brigid also helps with the defense. At the same time, Tyrone and Tandy can track down the strengthened god in the shadowy world. But Andre brings the two under his control through his music and confronts them with memories from their past. Eventually, Tandy manages to get over her abusive father, and Tyrone is able to defeat an image of himself that blames him for his mistakes. Afterwards they free the under Andres control Mikayla, Mina and Melissa and can defeat the loa with a sword of light created by Tandy.

Later, they both see how the city became a better place because of them: Lia is in jail, Solomon has turned his back on crime, Tyrone has been declared innocent, Connors is exposed as the murderer of Billy and Senator Asa Henderson of the cover-up of this crime convicted. Furthermore, Father Delgado has returned to an orderly life and Evita has taken her aunt's place. Tyrone and Tandy then leave New Orleans together to ensure law and order in other cities as well.

Reviews

season 1

The first season of the series received mostly good reviews. 89% of the 53 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were positive. At Metacritic , the first season received a Metascore of 68 out of 100 possible points.

Gunther Reinhardt from the Stuttgarter Zeitung explains that the series does not tell a glossy superhero story, but is a brittle milieu study that paints a sobering picture of social reality in the USA. S. Spichala from Moviejones explains : "Drug consumption, theft, difficult family relationships, loss trauma to be dealt with, thirst for revenge - and of course suddenly awakening superpower, that is a complex and exciting package introduced for the series fans." It continues: "[ ...] thanks to socially and socially critical issues from the background of both main characters, which already got them into serious trouble in the double episode premiere, it is basically a series for the whole family. "

Caroline Franke from Variety sees the strengths of the series primarily in a reasonable script, careful characterization and the almost surreal storytelling. Because of this and because of the dark tone, the series stands out from many other superhero series. Furthermore, she states that great importance is attached to not making the storylines of the two main characters dependent on each other, which makes the rather few common scenes all the more important.

Mike Hale of The New York Times is a little more critical of the series. As he points out, the first four episodes are almost exclusively devoted to the background story and creation of the duo. The two main characters make believable performances, but they spend a lot of time arguing and explaining, so the series is a bit lengthy at first and you have to wait halfway through to see the characters come into action .

Forbes' Merrill Barr describes the same problem as Mike Hale. The series consumes too much time to really dive deep into the story. In addition, it is not possible to tell from the first episodes where the series wants to go. However, the comic template had been cleverly changed, which was not least due to the change of location from New York City to New Orleans. He states that the series is not for everyone, but it can be really great if it can strike a balance between charm and seriousness.

Charlie Ridgely of Comicbook.com judges on the little-known for good drama series FreeForm was Marvel's Cloak & Dagger a big surprise. The series does not convince through twists and turns or plot twists , but through the quality and a deep sincerity of the powerful story about heroism and social justice.

season 2

The second season was also well received and was able to convince 86% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes .

Ridgely comments on the first two episodes of the second season that once again they are not afraid to deal with problems from the real world in the series. The writing team around Pokaski unites topics such as police violence, profiling , abuse and human trafficking and thereby also convey to a younger audience that these problems are real. This works very well in combination with the superhero existence of the two main characters, with Holt doing impressive work and showing a lot of self-confidence, while Joseph really develops. Around both of them together, the story is "treated with a great deal of care," with excitement and thrills coming from Lahana's character. So it is a good mixture of "joy, pain, amazement and intrigue".

Slashfilm.com's Monique Jones is more ambivalent about the second season. So the question arises for them whether it really took this entire season to get the main characters to where they were at the end. She cites as points of criticism that some resolutions of the subplot do not advance the actual story and that some character-enhancing scenes are too boring. It is also a shame that at the end of the season, which only formulates its own rules over time, parts of the final resolutions are not shown visually, but only described. Still, the ending, where the main characters finally had the right to wear their superhero costumes, be convincing. These would reflect what they went through during the season and how they grew so that they could make peace with their past and now fight for justice in the present. The good finale also offers a satisfying cliffhanger that makes you want more. Overall, Jones describes the second season as layered and complex. The series makes it clear once again that it wants to convey different, more contemporary messages than comparable series, and also stimulates thought about social issues. It should also be positively emphasized that for the first time smaller connections to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are being made: there is an allusion to Luke Cage and the end of the ninth episode can be interpreted as an allusion to the end of Avengers: Infinity War .

Pierre Schulte from Films.de shares this assessment of Jones, but judges that there is no “big cliffhanger” at the end of the season, that the story is well closed and that the end could also serve as the series finale. For him, the second season does not make much different than the previous one, only the weaknesses are felt more clearly. For the most part, the story is told very slowly, sometimes it stops completely , Andre Deschaine , embodied by Brooklyn McLinn , is a typical "0815 villain" and the little action and the CGI are in the lower average for television productions. Schulte positively emphasizes that the two main actors have a good chemistry and would promote the depth of character. Visually, each episode is designed like a work of art and is accompanied by a successful soundtrack, which, together with the New Orleans backdrop, creates a good atmosphere. The end, however, is only "very nice", although it wants to be spectacular.
