At the end of June 2018, Kevin Feige confirmed that a sequel to Doctor Strange was planned, but that there would be a few years between the two films. It was later announced that Scott Derrickson would also direct the second part. Benedict Cumberbatch is said to be the eponymous main character Dr. Stephen Strange , while Benedict Wong will appear for the fourth time as Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor for the second time as Mordo . In January 2019 it was announced that C. Robert Cargill will write the script for the sequel. He confirmed in an interview that Nightmare and Baron Mordo will be the villains of the film. The big goal is not to stage Baron Mordo like an average villain, but to bring him to Loki level. In addition to David Tennant and Matt Smith , Keanu Reeves should also be on the shortlist for the role of Nightmare . According to inside information, the tonality of the film is said to be reminiscent of a “1980s Boogaloo ”. There are also ideas in which Tilda Swinton and the characters Jericho Drumm alias Brother Voodoo and Clea have an appearance in the film. The film was officially named Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and announced for May 2021. Derrickson and Cumberbatch revealed that the film should contain horror elements in a PG-13 framework and that the main character will be "destroyed a bit". It was also announced that the Disney + series WandaVision will have a direct influence on the film and therefore Elizabeth Olsen will take up her role as Wanda Maximoff again for the film. In January 2020, Derrickson left the project due to creative differences, but will continue to work as executive producer . Cargill later commented that he and Derrickson never had a chance to write a finished script draft. Instead, Jade Bartlett was temporarily traded as a screenwriter. In February 2020, Michael Waldron was finally entrusted with the task, while Sam Raimi was hired to direct.

Filming is scheduled to begin in May 2020 at Pinewood Studios near London . Further recordings are to be made in the United States .

The film was originally scheduled to be released in German cinemas on May 6, 2021, and in US cinemas the following day. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to the May release date, the film should first be released in US cinemas on November 5, 2021, but was later released again on November 25, 2021 March 2022 postponed. The German theatrical release should take place the day before.
