Captain Marvel is an American science fiction film that was released in US theaters on March 8, 2019. The film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck . The film tells the intricate history and apotheosis of the super soldier Carol Danvers and her alien alter ego Vers. The leading role of the superhero Captain Marvel is played by Brie Larson . It is the 21st feature film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the third from last of the so-called Phase 3 . It's also the first film at the MCU to be built around a woman and the first with a female director involved. Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, before most events within the MCU.

action

The warrior Vers awakens once again from a nightmare on Hala, the main planet of the Kree Empire, in which she fights alongside an elderly woman in battle. Yon-Rogg, her commander, instructs her in training to bring her extraordinary powers, photon beams, which she can fire from her hands, under control, which the Supreme Intelligence could take away from her should she not succeed. Since their empire is threatened by a Skrull invasion that wants to take over their planets, Vers is sent on a mission together with Yon-Rogg, Minn-Erva, Bron-Char, Korath and Att-Lass and they board their spaceship Helion. You are supposed to rescue Soh-Larr, who works as a spy. They are ambushed on the planet Torfa. Verse is captured by a group of Skrulls who have taken the form of native torfas. Talos, the leader of the group, looks into their memories with the help of a machine. Together with Vers, he even searches her forgotten past on Earth, when she was a fighter pilot, when she was in training and further back when she was a young girl and child. He pays particular attention to her long-lost memory of Dr. Wendy Lawson, the woman from her nightmares.

Vers can break free before Talos can share all of her memories with her. While escaping, she crashes and lands on earth. The group of Skrulls also arrives on the planet they call C-53, and they take the form of humans. Vers can contact her commander, who instructs her to stay where she is; however, she would like Dr. Find Lawson before the Skrulls do. When SHIELD agent Fury asks the young woman about what happened, at first he doesn't believe her a word. But when he realizes that one of the Skrulls had taken the form of his colleague Coulson, he tries to work with Vers. She tells him about the Kree and their war with the Skrulls and begins to recollect her earlier life on earth freshen up. Fury takes her to a secret government facility, where she searches for Dr. Lawson's plans for the speed of light propulsion. Vers recognizes a Kree in Lawson, as the plans contain Kree glyphs that were previously believed to be evidence of Lawson's madness. However, this was in the context of an undercover mission on earth. Talos has tracked down Vers here as well and pursues her in the guise of Fury's superior cellar. After Fury in Keller recognizes the enemy, he escapes the facility by Verse in a plane and they discover Lawson's cat Goose as a stowaway on board. During the visit of her old pilot colleague Maria, Vers tries to close further gaps in her memory. Maria, who she has known half her life, and her daughter Monica kept her old things after Vers's accident six years ago, including photos of children when she was little Carol Danvers, and part of her military dog tag that only shows her name part Carol Dan can still be read.

Talos can find her here and make her an offer. In the interests of both of them, Vers should listen to the recording of a black box that they were able to save from the planet where she allegedly died. When she hears the recording, she remembers what happened six years earlier: During a test flight together with Dr. Lawson alias Mar-Vell had tried to destroy the light-speed drive after the crash so that it would not fall into the hands of the enemy. Someone from the enemy spaceship that caused the crash killed Lawson, which is why Danvers finished the task himself. Instead of being killed by the explosion, the power from the energy core was transferred to the pilot. Yon-Rogg had never told her about this, nor that he was the assailant who chased her and killed Lawson. To learn more about Lawson's drive, he took Carol with him, who - deprived of her memory - was trained and studied by the Kree. She was named on the basis of the second half of her identification tag, which only consists of the last syllable of her name, Vers . Talos tells her that Dr. Lawson wanted to provide the drive to the Skrulls at the time, so that they can flee from the Kree's sphere of control and thus end the war between them.

Using the coordinates given in the recording, the Skrulls, along with Vers, Fury and Maria, go in the modified plane to a camouflaged laboratory in orbit . Inexplicably, Talos is terrified of the cat Goose. The Mar-Vell laboratory is populated by a group of Skrulls, including Talos' wife and child. The energy core, the tesseract, is also on board the flying facility . However, they also made the commander and his people aware of the station, who are also looking for the tesseract. However, this is devoured by Goose, who is actually not a cat, but belongs to the extraterrestrial life form of the "Flerken". When Vers is captured and she is made to meet the Supreme Intelligence, she realizes that she has been lied to and controlled by the Kree about her abilities. When she removes the suppressor from her neck, she gains full power over her powers, which means that the Kree no longer stand a chance against her. Even bombs from a summoned Kree fleet to destroy the earth can render them harmless. Carol Danvers sends the commander back with the message that she will come back soon and end the war. Talos, his wife and their child are temporarily staying with Maria.

Before Carol Danvers keeps her promise and returns to the Kree Empire to find a new home for the Skrulls, she gives Fury his communicator back, which she has modified for emergencies so that he can reach them from several galaxies away if he ever needs your help. Goose, the Flerken who not only saved Fury from Kree fighters by devouring them but also scratched Fury's eye deeply, has found a new home in his office. After Danvers left Earth with the Skrulls, Fury plans to look for new heroes for SHIELD. He starts the Avengers Initiative he calls after discovering Danvers' Air Force nickname " Avenger " in an old photo.

In the end credits scene, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, James Rhodes and Bruce Banner watch the communication device that Fury left behind stop transmitting the signal. They are puzzling over who the signal is directed to when suddenly Carol Danvers stands behind them and asks about Fury.

The post-credit scene shows Goose choking out the tesseract on Fury's table.

production

Production history

During an event on the part of Marvel Studios in October 2014, a Captain Marvel film was announced for July 6, 2018, with producer Kevin Feige quickly making it clear that many characters in the comics had the title "Captain Marvel", but in the film only the female Carol Danvers will become a superhero. Due to the integration of Spider-Man into the MCU, many launch dates were postponed in February 2015, so Captain Marvel should then be released on November 2, 2018. In October of the same year, the film was again postponed to March 2019 in favor of Ant-Man and the Wasp . At San Diego Comic-Con International 2017, Feige announced that the film would set in the 1990s and that the Skrulls , whose film rights are owned by both Marvel and Fox , would be the movie's main antagonists. In addition, the first concept images were presented. According to executive producer Jonathan Schwartz , the decision to let the film play in the previous century came from giving the heroine the chance not to fit into an already existing universe, but to create her own world and at the same time a deep connection to establish the roots of mythology in the MCU.

After an old script version of Avengers: Age of Ultron planned to introduce the heroine Carol Danvers alias Captain Marvel into the Marvel universe, but this was viewed by the makers as an inappropriate way, she should now make her debut in her solo film in MCU while connecting to Ant-Man from 2015. Spiros Michalakis, a quantum physicist researching at the California Institute of Technology , says the film helps to better understand how Captain Marvel's powers and those of Ant-Man are connected . Despite her godlike powers, Danvers is plagued by self-doubt and also makes mistakes, like people without superpowers. Much of the film will be about the connection between Danvers and their arch-rival, according to Marvel producer Kevin Feige . Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson herself does not see the film as a pioneer of a new feminism trend, but as part of a societal debate on topics such as feminism and inclusion. The action is supposed to take place mainly in space. According to Feige, action films from the '90s were the main inspiration, which is why some homages to films from that time have been incorporated. Captain Marvel's appearance was also initiated in a post-credit scene in the movie Avengers: Infinity War .

Staff and cast

Brie Larson at the National Air and Space Museum at a screening of the first Captain Marvel trailer

From the outset, Marvel is said to have planned to hire as many women as possible for important positions. In April 2015, Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman were able to be won as scriptwriters, who were later supplemented by Geneva Robertson-Dworet , who was to write the final version of the script. A year later, Brie Larson was introduced as Captain Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 after rumors of her involvement , making her the first woman to star in a Marvel Studios solo film . Accordingly, the choice should have fallen on her because she gives the character humanity and strength without being a “perfectly idealized superhero”. Larson said of her commitment that Carol Danvers' special humor, along with her intelligence and ability to overcome challenges of all kinds, were key to her interest. Now she is very excited to play the role and wants to add complexity to it. In preparation for the role, she read a lot of comics and completed two to three hours of fitness, stunt and fighting training every day for six months, learning various martial arts such as boxing , kickboxing , judo , wrestling and Jiu Jitsu . As a result, she was able to perform many of her stunts herself. A young version of her is said to be played by Mckenna Grace . After the script for Marvel was "in the right shape", Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were hired for the director's chair in April 2017 . Both were previously only active as television directors, but Marvel noticed some notable work. Both of them would have created impressive visions of storytelling and thus clever, unique and special films. At joint meetings, they would have finally convinced Kevin Feige with their understanding of the main character and their motivation. Other candidates are said to have been Ava DuVernay and Angelina Jolie .

Samuel L. Jackson and Jeannie Leavitt

Three months later, the appearance of Samuel L. Jackson was known as Nick Fury , who will still have both eyes in the film and will be "far from the SHIELD ladder". According to Jackson, Nick Fury and Carol Danvers had a buddy-cop-like relationship in the film where they'd help and understand each other. According to the directors, there were many other absurd ideas for the scene in which Fury loses his eye due to the Flerken Goose . Originally the Skrulls were supposed to be responsible for the injury of the SHIELD leader in a "nearby fight". But in order not to disappoint the fans, they chose an alternative route, which, in retrospect, makes the mystery of Nick Fury in The Return of the First Avenger all the more amusing. At the end of the year, it was confirmed that Jude Law will play Yon-Rogg , Captain Marvel's former mentor and main antagonist . Originally, Keanu Reeves is said to have been intended for this role, but who left the project for John Wick: Chapter 3 . Law also completed combat training in preparation for his role, which he completed with Larson. As it became known in October 2017, Ben Mendelsohn will play the villain Talos , while Annette Bening will be seen as Supreme Intelligence , a powerful artificial intelligence that can also take a human form. In January 2018 DeWanda Wise was cast in a role that was still unknown at the time. Shortly after filming began, however, she had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series She's Gotta Have It and was replaced with actress Lashana Lynch . Her role was later revealed through set photos as Maria Rambeau , an Air Force pilot and former colleague of Carol Danvers .

At the same time it was announced that Clark Gregg , Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou would be returning to their roles from previous films. Gregg played the SHIELD agent Phil Coulson in phase 1 of the MCU , while Lee Pace could be seen as Ronan and Hounsou as Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy . Just like Jackson, Gregg had to be digitally rejuvenated by 25 years for the film, which the company Lola Visual Effects took over under the direction of VFX supervisor Christopher Townsend . Furthermore, a new group of heroes called Starforce is to be introduced in the film . Part of this are Captain Marvel , Yon-Rogg , Korath , Bron-Char played by Rune Temte , Att-Lass played by Algenis Perez Soto and Minn-Erva played by Gemma Chan . Stan Lee can be seen in a cameo as a passenger on a train in which Vers is looking for a shapeshifted Skrull. The creator of Marvel Comics, who died in November 2018, is also remembered right at the beginning of the film. The Marvel logo is composed of a series of photos depicting images of Lee on various Marvel movie sets.

Furthermore, real animals were in front of the camera for the first time in an MCU film. The cat Goose was embodied by four different cats, one doing the main work and the others standing by as a substitute or for certain tricks. In the event that a cat didn't want to interact with the actors, stuffed dummies were used or they were digitally animated. According to Townsend, between 70 and 80 of Goose's 100 recordings are said to be animated.

Shooting and film editing

The first planning for the shooting was made around nine months before the start of shooting. After filming preparations began in January 2018, filming with cinematographer Ben Davis began on March 23, 2018 under the working title Open World in Oxnard and took place in California in a 30-mile zone around Los Angeles after the California Film Commission has been promised a tax break of $ 20 million. The film team was primarily interested in filming as many scenes as possible in real locations, some of which even came from the '90s. So they shot in a quarry in Simi Valley , in Shaver Lake , at the Eastwood Power Station near Fresno and in the Lucerne Valley for desert shots. At the beginning of May 2018, recordings were made in Los Angeles for two days. At Edwards Air Force Base , the production team was given not only experienced pilots who had an advisory role, but also various hardware equipment in order to make the scenes as authentic as possible. In addition, Anna Boden , Brie Larson and Lashana Lynch visited Nellis Air Force Base , where Larson took part in flight training in which she was subjected to loads of up to 6.5 G. She also had the opportunity to speak to Jeannie Leavitt , the first female Air Force fighter pilot. Lynch, on the other hand, completed her flight training at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix .

Extraterrestrial scenes such as Kree or Skrull ships were set up in studios under the direction of production designer Andy Nicholson . The Kree world is angular, symmetrical and metallic, while the Skrulls prefer round, asymmetrical and organic materials and shapes. An abandoned mall was built in north Hollywood with the façades of well-known companies that looked so real that visitors would have tried to step inside. A total of 40 sets, including a complete hangar , were built for the film. After filming ended on June 23, 2018 in California , it was continued for two weeks in New Orleans , Louisiana , in order to shoot the final scenes there. On July 6, 2018, filming ended after 75 days of shooting. Further re-shoots took place in November 2018.

Editing was done by Elliot Graham , who was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for his work on Milk , and Debbie Berman , who worked in this capacity on the superhero films Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming , two of the earlier films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Costumes and film music

The costumes in the film were designed by costume designer Sanja Hays . The iconic chest piece with star and the colors red and blue were taken from the comics. In the film, Captain Marvel's suit was ultimately designed to be less “sexy”, but more functional, so that she could come across as a pilot and soldier while at the same time ensuring Larson's freedom of movement. A total of eight suits, mostly made of leather, were made for various types of recording. The suits of the Skrulls, who wear purple overalls and black underwear in the comics, were completely redesigned for the film. Only the color purple was adopted in order to set the Skrulls apart from the green Starforce suits as clearly as possible. Anna Boden commented on other costumes designed by Hays that they would look contemporary and authentic for the '90s without mocking the era.

The music for the film is composed by the Turkish composer Pınar Toprak , who also created the music for the television series Krypton about Superman's grandfather. Michael Giacchino was hired by Marvel to check the score and then shared some thoughts with Toprak. The soundtrack to the film, which comprises a total of 23 pieces of music, was released for download on March 8, 2019 by Marvel Music and Hollywood Records. In addition, songs by Garbage , Elastica , REM and Nirvana can be heard in the film, but also girl power pop such as What a Man by Salt'N'Pepa and Riot Grrrl - Punk by Hole .

publication

A first picture of Brie Larson in her costume was featured in Entertainment Weekly on September 5th . A first trailer followed on September 18, 2018. The second trailer was released on December 3, 2018; a third followed on January 8, 2019. The film was also represented with a TV commercial at Super Bowl LIII on February 3, 2019. The world premiere took place in London on February 27, 2019 . The film was released in German cinemas on March 7, 2019 and one day later in US and Chinese cinemas. Captain Marvel is the first MCU film that did not appear on Netflix , but exclusively on the streaming service Disney + .

The film has been available in Germany since June 2019 both digitally, on DVD , Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray .

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, it was approved from the age of 12, but is allowed from the age of 6 if accompanied by parents. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The complex and fast-paced film contains a large number of fight and action scenes. Violence , however, is not sensationally played out or explicitly brought into the picture. ”It goes on to say that humorous scenes always offer an opportunity to relieve pressure, but the positive message about self-determination and humanitarian willingness to help prevent no fearful ones from 12-year-olds , a socio-ethical disorienting effect is to be feared.

Reviews

After press presentations in February 2019, the first criticisms were largely positive. The portrayals of Ben Mendelsohn and Lashana Lynch as well as the cat Goose, who would steal the show from everyone, were highlighted.

So far, the film has won over 78 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received a Metascore of 64 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian describes Captain Marvel as an often captivating superhero action movie, as a nonlinear mashup of past and present, memories and present experience and of action on the ground and away from this. So the film is definitely an entertaining new part of the saga.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter doesn't find the film boring, but he notices a certain lack of imagination and a bland visual style. Therefore, Captain Marvel will not do for women what Black Panther did for black superheroes.

David Ehrlich of IndieWire thinks that the first and most fatal mistake in the script Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck co - wrote with Geneva Robertson-Dworet is that Vers, or Carol Danvers, as she is later called, becomes one during most of their adventures Let me become an amnestist.

Sebastian Ossowski from IGN Germany explains that Carol Danvers asks himself until the end of the film who she is, who she can be, but above all who she wants to be, whereby the question of her true origin is also the film's great parable. As the new Avenger, at the beginning of her film, she was too self-confident and aloof to establish an immediate sympathetic connection with the audience, Ossowski continued. Captain Marvel works best in the quiet moments when Danvers reflects on her past and shows that, despite her Kree blood, she is a person with emotions and weaknesses.

David Kleingers from Spiegel Online thinks that the film takes a surprising amount of time for slow-paced scenes, in which Carol Danvers in particular gains in profile and well-timed dialog jokes find their place. In addition, Captain Marvel surprises with at least one of his plot vols as well as with a humanitarian stance that is not limited to earth residents and almost goes through as a political commentary, so Kleingers.

In his review, Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel recalls initial reactions on the Internet, according to which Brie Larson's Danvers was too cool, too robotic and not personable enough. He also points out the references to action cinema of the 1990s, especially Linda Hamilton's iconic android killer from Terminator 2 .

Classification in the MCU

Most of the film is set in 1995, before most of the events within the MCU . At the end of Captain Marvel , it is indicated that the heroine will return in Avengers: Endgame .
