action
After Scott Lang once managed to leave subatomic space again, Hank Pym and his daughter Hope van Dyne are working on a "tunnel", a way of entering and exiting this space. Both believe that Hanks' wife Janet, who was missing in subatomic space, is still alive and want to bring her back.
After the events in Germany, Scott was able to negotiate with the governments that he would only have to be under house arrest for two years as a punishment in order to see his daughter Cassie regularly. When he slipped over a self-made construction into the garden together with her in his house in San Francisco , he broke through the fence with his ankle cuff. The alarm triggered by this calls the FBI, led by Jimmy Woo, to his house, whereupon they search it to make sure that Scott has no contact with Hank or Hope. When Scott later takes a bath, he has a vision of Janet playing with young Hope. He then calls Hank to tell him about his experiences. A short time later he was stung by an ant and passed out.
When Scott wakes up again, Hope is taking him to Hanks' new laboratory. Both turn out to be quite negative towards Scott, as they did not agree with his actions in Germany. Since he was using Hanks' suit (illegally), the FBI is looking for them. Hank reveals to Scott that they see his vision of Janet as a sign that she is still alive and trapped in subatomic space. For this reason they want to make the "tunnel" more stable, for which they have to buy a component from black market dealer Sonny Burch. Burch is only interested in doing profitable business with Hank and Hope and makes a sale dependent on it. She does not agree, which is why Burch keeps the component and her money. Hope then fights with her "Wasp" costume, which, unlike Ant-Man's suit, also has wings and weapons. Wasp can take out most of Burch's followers, but is prevented from taking the component with him by the suddenly appearing "Ghost". When Ant-Man arrives and supports Wasp in the fight against Ghost, the latter disappears and takes Hanks' shrunken laboratory along with the "tunnel" and the component.
To get the lab back, the three Hank's old colleagues visit Dr. Bill Foster, who now teaches at a university. Dr. Foster helps them locate Hank's shrunken laboratory, whereupon the three of them head to Ghost's home. When trying to take the laboratory away, they are overwhelmed and captured by Ghost. There it turns out that Dr. Foster is an ally of Ghost. She reveals herself to be Ava Starr, the daughter of one of Hank's former colleagues, whom Hank had thrown out of the company. Ava's father then continued his research alone, but was killed together with his wife in an accident during his research. Ava, who was the only survivor, got through the escaping forces the uncontrollable ability to be in different phases at the same time and thereby become invisible or be able to walk through objects. Dr. Foster once helped Ava and now wants to relieve her of the pain caused by her ability. To do this, they want to extract the quantum energy from Janet. Knowing this could kill Janet, Hank simulates a heart attack and brings Dr. Foster so to open a can of shrunken ants. These enlarge and free Scott, Hope and Hank, whereupon the three of them can flee with the laboratory and the component.
In the meantime, Burch has found out the whereabouts of the three fugitives with the help of a truth serum from Scott's business partners Luis, Dave and Kurt, who run an unsuccessful security company, whereupon he communicates this information to the FBI. Scott, Hope and Hank, who meanwhile have built a stable "tunnel" and were able to determine their whereabouts through contact with Janet, are warned about the FBI by Luis. While Scott was at home in time and was able to hide his absence from Agent Woo, Hope and Hank are captured by the FBI. Ghost manages to steal Hank's laboratory again.
After Scott can free Hope and Hank from the interrogation room, Ghost and the three of them fight, and they also get support from Luis. During the chase, the laboratory falls into the hands of Burch, who escapes with it on a ferry, but is stopped by Scott, who is now "Giant-Man". Hank can enter subatomic space with a self-made missile through the "tunnel" and bring his wife Janet back from there. With the help of her energy, Janet manages to heal Ghost and relieve her pain. Dr. Foster later agrees to take care of Ava. Dave and Kurt could meanwhile arrest Burch and his people and with the help of the truth serum let them confess their actions to the police, which increases the reputation of their company significantly. After Agent Woo has ended the house arrest of Scott, who is now back with Hope, he can visit Cassie again at home.
In the mid-credit scene , Scott goes into subatomic space to get quantum energy for Ghost. When he asks Hope, Hank and Janet to get him out again, he gets no answer, because Thanos' finger snapped the three of them to dust and Scott is stuck. After the credits roll, you can see the aftermath of the flipping in town and one of the giant ants in Scott's home playing the drums.
production
Production history
Kevin Feige, producer of Ant-Man, confirmed after its premiere in July 2015 that the studio had "a super cool idea for the next Ant-Man movie" and they would find a way to make it happen if the audience did would like to. Director Peyton Reed mentioned conversations about a possible stand-alone adventure with Hank Pym as Ant-Man , which, according to Cinema Blend's Eric Eisenberg , would open up a great opportunity to revive the Marvel short film franchise. After the great global success of the film Ant-Man , Walt Disney Pictures officially announced a sequel called Ant-Man and the Wasp in October 2015 . By the end of November 2015, Ant-Man had grossed over US $ 518 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful films of 2015.
In the film, Hope van Dyne wears a new and improved suit developed by her father with a streamlined aesthetic, with wings and blasters. In March 2018, directors Anthony and Joe Russo stated that the film is closely related to the plot of Avengers: Infinity War . In addition to the actor Paul Rudd, Chris McKenna , Erik Sommers , Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari were involved in the work on the script.
Cast and score
At the end of July 2015, actor David Dastmalchian also declared his willingness to participate in a sequel again, who supported Scott Lang as Kurt Ant-Man in the first Ant-Man film. Paul Rudd once again took on the role of Scott Lang, who is on the road as Ant-Man . Evangeline Lilly plays Hope van Dyne, who played the second title role as The Wasp. Michael Douglas plays Hank Pym, Michael Peña played Luis and Walton Goggins plays Sonny Burch. In July 2017, it was announced at Comic-Con in San Diego that Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Pfeiffer would be part of the cast. The Catwoman actress Pfeiffer plays a very central role in the film as Janet van Dyne and Hank Pym's wife, who has shrunk to subatomic size or has disappeared. Fishburne introduces Dr. Bill Foster, who works with both Tony Stark and Hank Pym in the comics. Marvel also announced that British actress Hannah John-Kamen had received the role of Ghost.
The film music was composed by Christophe Beck . The soundtrack for the film, which comprises a total of 25 pieces of music, was released for download on July 6, 2018 by Hollywood Records and Marvel Music.
Filming and publishing
Filming for Ant-Man and the Wasp began on August 1, 2017 at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in the US state of Georgia . In September 2017, further recordings were made in San Francisco . Then the film was shot in Savannah in October and in Hawaii in November , where filming ended on November 19, 2017.
The first one and a half minute trailer was released on January 30, 2018, almost six months before the planned German theatrical release. A second trailer in English followed on May 1, 2018, and appeared in German on June 15, 2018 in a slightly modified form. The world premiere took place on June 25, 2018 in Los Angeles. The film was released in US cinemas on July 6, 2018 and in German cinemas on July 26, 2018. The theatrical release in China took place on August 24, 2018.
reception
Age rating
In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 12, but allowed from the age of 6 if accompanied by the parents. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is told using genre-typical means, numerous action scenes, but also humorous elements, which repeatedly provide relief. Although children under the age of 12 can be overwhelmed by some dramatic and threatening passages in combination with an abundance of partly ambivalent characters, 12-year-olds are able to place these aspects in the genre context on the basis of their media experience. The many comic, often comical exaggerations as well as the clearly fantastic settings make it easier for this age group to distance themselves. Since the film also emphasizes positive values such as friendship and solidarity, there is no risk of being overwhelmed for this age group. "
Reviews
Of the more than 400 reviews listed by Rotten Tomatoes , 88 percent are more positive and award an average of 7 of the possible 10 points. On Metacritic he got a Metascore of 70 out of 100 possible points.
Philipp Schwarz from Spiegel Online explains that in the film the otherwise fixed and predictable system of proportions has been lifted off its hinges, and that this light-footed overturning of a central framework of our everyday reality is above all amusing: “The sudden miniaturization of what is actually large and the sudden expansion the actually small - they are two sides of a great cosmic joke, which is not exhausted even by umpteen times repetition. "
Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress explains that, in contrast to the first film , not only the changed body size of the heroes is used for action scenes, but buildings, salt shakers and, above all, cars have also shrunk, which culminates in a spectacular car chase, around which the entire film was ultimately written. Before and after this sequence, however, nothing worth remembering happens, jokes, set pieces and scientific nonsense are routinely copied from the first part, Krüger continues. With Ant-Man and the Wasp , Edgar Wright's ideas were used up, and Peyton Reed only made a copy of his 2015 film.
Steve Buchta from PC Magazin says that Reed continued to tell the "Ant-Man" story very logically and staged it as turbulent fun full of ideas, which is especially true for the repeatedly abrupt change in perspective from big to small and from tiny to gigantic: “Playing with sizes is sometimes funny, sometimes curious, sometimes impressive and, especially in 3D, always great to look at. As one hopes for a sequel, the makers shift up a gear in all areas, but without losing the carefree looseness that distinguished the first Ant-Man . ”The actors established in the first part clearly went into their roles again , so Buchta, and especially Evangeline Lilly as Wasp benefit from the development of her character. But the newcomers, including Michelle Pfeiffer , fit in well with the ensemble, and in general it is mainly the strong female figures that are remembered. The composer Christophe Beck always finds the right notes and really lets off steam in the action scenes, so Buchta sums up: “If you liked the first part, you should be more than satisfied with the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp . Since the Origin story is no longer available, there are even more Ant-Man in action. "
Neon-Zombie.net wrote that the film does not represent a game changer, as Thor: Ragnarok (2017) still was, but that it continues the series consistently, massively expanding its own world and embracing the comic roots the original perfectly.
Gross profit
In North America, Ant-Man and the Wasp topped the cinema charts on its opening weekend with a grossing of around $ 76 million, bringing in almost $ 20 million more than its predecessor Ant-Man . Worldwide revenues are US $ 622.67 million so far, making it number 11 of the most successful films of 2018 . The film recorded 822,425 visitors in Germany.
