Thor is an American action and science fiction - feature film from the year 2011 , of a comic book adaptation of the superhero - comic character Thor the publisher Marvel , which in turn is based on the thunder god Thor from Norse mythology back. The film was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred by Chris Hemsworth .

A kind of preview of Thor was a scene that was seen after the credits of the film Iron Man 2  (2010). Just like the latter film, Thor was self-financed directly by Marvel Studios' production company, Marvel Studios . Both films are also part of a coherent universe, the " Marvel Cinematic Universe ".

The reviews have been largely positive. At the box office worldwide , Thor grossed over $ 449 million, almost three times the budget.

On October 31, 2013, the sequel Thor - The Dark Kingdom was released in German cinemas. The film was awarded through Disney .

action

Leading actor Chris Hemsworth at a press conference on the premiere of Thor in London .

In the year 965 AD, the ice giants from the Jotunheim ice world intend to bring about a new ice age on earth. The father of the gods Odin ruled Asen but stand against them and beat them in a great battle. Odin wrestles a truce from Laufey , the king of the ice giants, and takes the urn, the source of his power, from him. Laufey's newborn son, the extraordinarily small ice giant Loki , also brings Odin to Asgard and raises him as his own son.

Centuries later, Odin's biological son Thor is said to succeed Odin's firstborn and be crowned king. However, three ice giants interrupt the ceremony when they break into the armory to take control of the urn. Although the Destroyer (German: "Destroyer"), guardian of the chamber, kills them without further ado, Thor still seeks revenge in order to demonstrate Asgard's strength. Thereupon Odin rebukes him and prevents Thor's accession to the throne for the time being. Through a ruse by his brother Loki, Thor disregards his father's instructions and, together with Loki and his friends Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun and Lady Sif, crossed the rainbow bridge Bifröst to Jotunheim to find out how the ice giants managed it, unnoticed by Heimdall , the all-seeing guardians of the bridge to invade Asgard. In Jotunheim, Laufey says there are traitors in Asgard and provokes Thor's anger. It comes to a fight in which the six sir threaten to succumb despite Thor's overwhelming strength. Only Odin's intervention saves Thor and his companions from the overwhelming power of the ice giants.

As Laufey refuses a new armistice and Odin threatens war, the latter returns to Asgard with his sons and their friends. There it comes to another argument in which Odin describes Thor as combative, cruel and complacent. The latter in turn calls his father simple-minded, weak and old. In order to give his impulsive son a lesson in humility, Odin banishes Thor to earth, takes his strength away and casts a spell on his hammer Mjolnir . The hammer also lands on earth and can only be lifted by someone who proves to be "worthy" of it.

Meanwhile on Earth, astrophysicist Jane Foster, her assistant Darcy Lewis and her mentor, Dr. Erik Selvig, in the New Mexico desert, weather phenomena that Jane believes are related to her research. Suddenly a hurricane appears in front of them , and while they are still trying to avoid it, Thor, who has just landed on earth, runs in front of their car. When he asks them to find out where he is, Darcy stuns him with a taser . Thor wakes up in a hospital in the small town of Puente Antiguo and immediately attacks the carers. Although he still has enormous physical strength, he is eventually overpowered by several guards. After he finally managed to escape from the hospital, Jane Foster drives him again, who is currently looking for him. Foster hopes Thor will provide information about the origin of the cyclone.

In the meantime, a pickup driver discovers the hammer in the desert. Since he was unable to pull it out of the stone, numerous onlookers soon found themselves at the site and took turns trying their luck until Phil Coulson, an agent of the SHIELD secret service , got there and had the site secured.

Loki, who had survived the contact of an ice giant in Jotunheim unscathed, arrives at the assumption that he himself could have descended from the ice giant. In the armory, Odin confirms his suspicions and informs Loki about his true origin. When Loki accuses Odin of not loving him, Odin falls asleep from the exertion. Meanwhile, Thor's companions discuss the fate of their friend. Hogun raises the suspicion that Loki, as a powerful wizard, could have secretly given the ice giants access to Asgard. Together they want to persuade Odin to bring Thor back to Asgard. Meanwhile, Loki ascends the throne and refuses to undo Thor's banishment and instead demands the loyalty of his friends.

Thor learns that the hammer has been found and sets off into the desert. Jane Foster, whose research papers have been confiscated by SHIELD, accompanies him. Thor secretly gains access to the cordoned off site, but is also unable to lift the hammer. He then lets SHIELD take him into custody and interrogate him without resistance. Loki pays him a visit, claiming that Odin has died and that the mother would forbid Thor's return in favor of a peace deal with the ice giants, so that Thor saw no reason to return to Asgard. Then Loki goes to Jotunheim and makes Laufey the offer to give him the opportunity to kill Odin and to get the urn back into his possession in order not to ascend to the throne as the murderer of his predecessor, but withholds the fact that he is Laufey's son is.

In the meantime, Foster and Selvig managed to use a trick to free Thor from SHIELD's control and to steal back Foster's research records. After a night of partying with Selvig, Thor meets his friends Hogun, Fandral, Volstagg and Sif, who have convinced Heimdall to allow them to travel to Earth. When Loki learns of this, he freezes Heimdall with the help of the urn and sends the Destroyer to Earth to kill Thor. After easily overpowering the SHIELD agents, Thor's friends stand in the way of the Destroyer while Thor and Jane try to get the residents of Puente Antiguo to safety. Finally, he faces the Destroyer personally and offers his brother his own life so that in return he spares the people. The Destroyer then kills Thor, but Thor has proven himself worthy through his selfless sacrifice, so that the hammer frees itself from the stone, lands in Thor's hand and brings him back to life. Now again at full strength, Thor defeats the Destroyer without much effort.

After a short talk with Agent Coulson, Thor says goodbye to Jane and goes back to Asgard with his friends thanks to the help of Heimdall, who has been able to free himself in the meantime. Loki has meanwhile brought Laufey and some of his warriors to Asgard, but kills his biological father before he can murder Odin. In fact, Loki intends to kill all the ice giants in order to erase the memory of his origins once and for all and to prove himself a worthy successor to Odin. For this purpose he wants to destroy Jotunheim with the help of the Bifröst, but Thor stands in his way. Unable to deactivate it, Thor eventually destroys the bridge. The awakened Odin saves his sons from falling into the abyss under the bridge, but Loki, who realizes that his father does not approve of his actions, throws himself into the depths.

Due to the destruction of the Bifröst, Thor can no longer return to Earth, where Jane and her colleagues look for another way to connect to Asgard. At the end of the credits it is announced that Thor will be returning in Marvel's The Avengers .

In a post-credit scene , SHIELD brings Erik Selvig to headquarters, where Nick Fury, head of intelligence, asks him to help investigate a mysterious artifact, the "Tesseract Cube." In fact, Selvig is under the influence of Loki, who came to earth, which Fury remains hidden.

Thor Odinson ( Chris Hemsworth ) is an Ase from the world of Asgard and was onceworshipedby the Vikings as the god of thunder. His weapon of choice is his war hammer, Mjolnir , forged in the core of a dying star, which returns in Thor's hand after each throw and enables himto create and fly hurricanes . Due to Thor's hot-headed behavior, however, there is repeated conflict with his father, Odin.

Jane Foster ( Natalie Portman ) is an astrophysicist who, together with her assistant Darcy Lewis ( Kat Dennings ) and mentor Erik Selvig ( Stellan Skarsgård ), studies weather phenomena in the New Mexico desert that she believes are related to her research .

Loki ( Tom Hiddleston ) is the son of Laufey, the king of the ice giants from Jotunheim, but was abandoned as a child and found by Odin, who adopted him as his own son. Out of envy of his brother, he devises a plan to instigate a conflict between Asgard and Jotunheim in the hope of rising in Odin's favor.

Odin ( Anthony Hopkins ) is the father of Thor and the King of Asgard. His preferred weapon is his Gungnir spear . In 965 AD Odin and his sir defeated the frost giants from Jotunheim, and Odin made a truce with their king Laufey. Odin found Laufey's abandoned son, took him with him and raised him as his own son Loki at the side of Thor.

Fandral is a boastful womanizer and is wounded while fighting the frost giants in Jotunheim. He uses a sword as a weapon. Volstagg's great passion is food, which manifests itself in a pronounced corpulence. He prefers to fight with an ax. Finally, rather unusual for an Asin, Sif has proven herself as a warrior at the side of her male companions and uses a shield and various stabbing weapons, including a spear , in battle .

production

Emergence

Director Kenneth Branagh at a press conference on the occasion of the premiere of Thor in London .
Don Payne, one of the screenwriters on Thor , at San Diego Comic-Con International 2008.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson undertook to play the role of Nick Fury in eight other Marvel films in addition to Thor .

There had been plans for a real film version of the Thor comics for a long time. After Darkman was completed in 1990, Sam Raimi proposed the 20th Century Fox project . However, they did not understand the concept and assumed that it should be a kind of Hercules adventure film. In the wake of the success of the Marvel film X-Men from the year 2000, the Marvel offshoot Marvel Films planned a Thor television series with Tyler Mane in the title role, which was broadcast by the broadcaster UPN , together with the film studio Artisan Entertainment, which was later acquired by Lions Gate Entertainment should be. Although UPN commissioned a script, the project never got beyond the planning phase. After Sony Pictures Entertainment had acquired the rights to the Marvel version of Thor, David S. Goyer was in the meantime planned as screenwriter and director, but this project was ultimately not realized.

Shortly thereafter, Marvel decided to dare a new strategy for future comic adaptations: Due to retrospectively disadvantageous contracts that had been concluded in the 1990s, Marvel had only been able to post low license income for film adaptations of its own comics. Future film adaptations should therefore enable Marvel to gain a greater share of the profits by expanding the publisher's own Marvel Studios , which until then had only acted as licensor, to an actual film production company , while Paramount Pictures should take over the distribution. Marvel took out a $ 525 million loan from Merrill Lynch to fund this venture . Marvel also wanted to keep more creative control over the film adaptations in this way and ensure that the actions and representations of the characters did not differ too much from the comic books. One of the basic ideas behind the new approach was that all films that would be produced by Marvel Studios should play similarly to the comic books in a cohesive universe, which should enable crossovers and appearances of the same characters in different films. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, gave this universe the name "Marvel Cinematic Universe".

Thor was among the titles to be filmed by Marvel Studios . Mark Protosevich wrote a first draft of the script. The original director was Matthew Vaughn . Although Vaughn left the project in late 2007, Marvel planned to release the film in 2010. Also in 2007, J. Michael Straczynski , at the time the author of the Thor comics, revised the storyline originally written by Protosevich. Since his contribution represented an "early phase" in his eyes and the final screenplay was written by Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne, he was initially prepared to forego his name in the credits of the film. It was only when Payne, Miller, and Stentz agreed to support him that Straczynski changed his mind, and indeed the Writers Guild of America ultimately decided in favor of naming him.

In December 2008, Kenneth Branagh was finally confirmed as director. Three months later, the start date, which had meanwhile been set for June 2011, was brought forward to May 20, 2011 in order to differentiate Thor more clearly from the film Captain America: The First Avenger , also produced by Marvel Studios, which was scheduled for a release in July 2011. In February 2009, Samuel L. Jackson signed a contract with Marvel that stipulated that he would play the role of Nick Fury, which he first played in Iron Man , in a total of nine films, including Thor . In May 2009, the engagement of Chris Hemsworth for the roles of Thor and that of Tom Hiddleston as Loki was confirmed. Hiddleston had also previously been considered for the title role. Natalie Portman was finally confirmed to star in Jane Foster in July of that year.

In order to physically prepare for his role, Hemsworth underwent intense nine months of strength training. Tom Hiddleston also dealt with the portrayal of his role in the comics in detail, just like the other actors. According to director Kenneth Branagh, Jaimie Alexander , the actress in Sif, is actually a downright comic geek , and knows more about the Thor comics than most of those involved. A few days before shooting began, Josh Dallas replaced Stuart Townsend in the role of Fandral .

Director Kenneth Branagh described the question of which elements of the Thor myth should be used for the film as a great challenge. For example, the character of Balder and the queen of the norn, Carnilla, who were originally invented for the comics, were completely left out in the film. The focus of the film should be the relationship between Odin and his sons from the start. Branagh, who is known for Shakespeare film adaptations, emphasizes in this context that any similarities between the film plot and the works of Shakespeare can be traced back to the concepts originally devised by Stan Lee for the comic book as well as their originals from Norse mythology , since these are only about deal with the same "classic" themes that can be found in Shakespeare's works. According to Branagh, Thor's exile from Asgard can be traced back to the biblical story of the expulsion of humans from the Garden of Eden ; he also mentions the depiction of Alfred Dreyfus' exile in the film The Life of Emile Zola as an inspiration for the scene in question . According to Branagh, the basic story arc about Thor, his exile from Asgard and his character development was already included in the plot drafts of Mark Protosevich and J. Michael Straczynski. In the script drafts by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, with the help of Branagh, the meaning of the scenes that take place on contemporary earth was worked out, while Don Payne worked out the roles of Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis in collaboration with the cast.

The film's final regular scene, in which Jane Foster, Erik Selvig, and Darcy Lewis prepare for another research mission, was originally planned as the movie's opening scene. The subsequent tracking shot through space, which can be seen at the beginning of the credits , should originally have been used earlier in the film. The actual opening scene of the film, in which Jane Foster and her colleagues investigate weather phenomena in the New Mexico desert, were intended to first introduce the viewer to characters who are at home on contemporary earth before the film introduces the world of Asgard. For the implementation of the northern lights in the sky in that scene, director Kenneth Branagh and his film crew used photos of actual northern lights that were taken around the world during the production of the film. The appearance of Asgard was inspired by the comic drawings of Jack Kirby as well as the architecture of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire . Many of the backgrounds in Asgard were actually built as backdrops so that the film does not appear too "synthetic" and the computer-animated backgrounds used for other scenes are less noticeable as such.

Filming began in January 2010 at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach , California . The scenes in the New Mexico desert were filmed on location. For the exterior shots of the fictional small town of Puente Antiguo, the backdrop of a western town was used, which is located near Galisteo, New Mexico , on the grounds of a ranch and has already been used for films such as Silverado (1985) or Appaloosa (2008) . For Thor , the set has been heavily redesigned and transformed into a modern small town that director Kenneth Branagh describes as an "enhanced version of Americana ". Branagh describes the paintings by Edward Hopper as the inspiration for the coloring . Ultimately, the decision was made to go to the backdrop city so that the shooting of the fight with the “Destroyer” would not have to block traffic in an actual city. The bar where Thor and Erik Selvig get drunk is actually a strip club in Santa Fe , New Mexico. The shooting of a scene with six horses that was originally scheduled to take place on Del Mar Beach , California, was ultimately relocated to an unspecified location in northern California, despite city council approval.

As in many modern Hollywood films, Thor has housed numerous brands as product placement , including Acura , Dr Pepper , 7-Eleven , Visa, and Burger King . In the film, the Destroyer destroys a 7-Eleven gas station and several Acura vehicles. For the scenes with the destroyer, an immobile dummy was sometimes used, while in other shots only large screw clamps and gaffer tape indicate the rough shape of the destroyer. The frost giants are some actors and extras who have been equipped with make-up and costumes and then reproduced using computer effects. Legacy Effects (formerly Stan Winston Studios) was responsible for the costumes and make-up of the frost giants , while the computer effects came from several studios: Whiskytree from San Rafael , California was responsible for the backgrounds of Asgard, the French studio BUF for the Rainbow Bridge Bifröst , the sea below, Heimdall's observatory, the Yggdrasil effect and the tracking shots through space at the beginning of the film and during the credits, digital domain for the frost giants and the scenes that take place in Jotunheim, Luma Pictures from Santa Monica for the Destroyer and the Australian studio Fuel VFX for the interior view of the "Bifröst tunnel" and the "Odin's sleep" effect. Since director Kenneth Branagh was reluctant to shoot Thor in 3D , the film was converted to 3D by Stereo D instead during post-production . The soundtrack was composed by Patrick Doyle , who has worked with director Kenneth Branagh since Henry V.

Marvel's Avengers director Joss Whedon directed the post-credits scene in which Erik Selvik meets Nick Fury.

Reference to the template

Natalie Portman's role as astrophysicist Jane Foster was originally a nurse and later a doctor in the comics.
Jaimie Alexander's role as Sif was Thor's wife in Norse mythology , but only one of several women in Thor's life in the comics. In the film she is just his comrade in battle.
Jeremy Renner only has a brief appearance in the film as Clint Barton, also known as the superhero Hawkeye in the comics.
The occupation of Asen Heimdall with Idris Elba angry comic fans and provoked racists .
J. Michael Straczynski , a former author of Thor comics, was involved in the plot of the film and also has a cameo in the film.

The portrayal of Thor and the world of Asgard in the Marvel Comics is a very free interpretation of Norse mythology . The film adaptation goes one step further and suggests that the sir are not "gods" but aliens who, due to their highly developed technology, only appear to people like gods. Because of this, the costumes in the film are remotely similar to Viking clothing .

In Norse mythology, Thor was the god of lightning and thunder. His weapon is the war hammer Mjölnir , which never misses its target and returns to Thor's hand after every throw. In the comics, Thor was originally a walking physician named Donald Blake who discovered a stick in a cave in Norway. When he struck it against a rock, the stick turned into Thor's hammer Mjolnir, with the inscription “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor” (translated in the film as “Whoever holds this hammer if he is worthy of him, may he have the strength of Thor ”), and Blake himself became Thor. Initially, the comic Thor was just Donald Blake in Thor's body, but later this was changed to the fact that Odin had once banished Thor to earth, turned him into a human and stolen his memory to teach him humility. Eventually, Odin completely removed Donald Blake's identity. For a long time Thor spoke an ancient English based on Middle English in the comics , but this has recently been abandoned under author J. Michael Straczynski , who also wrote an early draft of the film plot. In the original version of the film, Chris Hemsworth and the cast of the other sir speak only with a pronounced English accent that cannot be traced back to a specific region. Thor's clothing in the film is freely based on various costumes he wore in the comics over the years. The long blonde hair is also borrowed from the comic model, and although his face was clean-shaven when he first appeared in comics, in later years he more often wore a beard, just like his film counterpart. Mjolnir's appearance and skills are also based on the comic model. In the comics, Mjolnir could only be lifted by a few other individuals over the years due to the magic, mostly only in one-off emergency situations. In the film, "Donald Blake" is the name of Jane Foster's ex-boyfriend. Foster and Selvig later use the name as a false identity for Thor in order to get him out of custody by SHIELD.

Jane Foster was originally a nurse in the comics who worked with Donald Blake. For a long time her role was that of the hero's classic potential lover, who, however, does not reveal his secret identity to her. She later fell in love with another doctor named Keith Kincaid, whom she eventually married. In the meantime, she was merged with the Asin Sif to save Foster's life, but the two were ultimately separated again. Some time later, Foster himself studied medicine and worked as a doctor for the Avengers , to which Thor belongs. In contrast, she is only an astrophysicist in the film.

According to Norse mythology , Loki was the son of two giants, but still one of the Aesir, who is connected with Odin by blood brotherhood . Since he often asserts his interests through lies and intrigues, his relationship with the other sir is divided. In the comics, however, Loki was reinterpreted as the son of a frost giant and Odin's adopted son, who is filled with envy of his brother Thor and is one of his greatest enemies. Because of his insidious nature, he is also nicknamed the "Prince of Lies". Since Thor sees himself as the protector of humans, Loki often tries to harm them. In addition to Thor, he occasionally comes across other Marvel superheroes, especially the Avengers, of which Thor is a member. Loki's costume in the film is also based on the comic model.

Odin was also Thor's father in Norse mythology, but he did not lose his eye in battle, but gave it voluntarily in exchange for visionary powers. The eight-legged horse Sleipnir also goes back to the mythological model. In the comics, just like in the film, Odin is portrayed as the spirited father of Thor, who does not always approve of his son's behavior and occasionally punishes him by banishing him to earth, robbing him of his powers or stealing the memory of Thor from Jane Foster. He also sacrificed his eye in exchange for wisdom to avert the threatening Ragnarök . The "Odin sleep", in which Odin goes regularly to renew his strength, was originally invented for the comics. Odin's appearance in the film is freely based on his portrayal in the comics. Thor's mother is the earth goddess Jörd in Norse mythology , but Gaea in the comics, which is freely based on the Greek earth goddess Gaia . In mythology, Frigg is one of Odin's wives, her comic counterpart "Frigga" is Odin's only wife, with Queen Asgard and Thor's stepmother at his side.

Heimdall was also the guardian of Asgard in Norse mythology and in particular of the rainbow bridge Bifröst, who has very sharp eyes and golden teeth. In the comics he is obliged to be absolutely loyal to Odin and, on his orders, even prevented Thor from entering or leaving Asgard. In contrast to his film counterpart, he has a light skin color in the comics, just like the other sir. The cast of the dark-skinned Idris Elba for the role of Heimdall provided under both comic fans and among supporters of the racist white supremacy - ideology who feel Norse mythology connected, resentment.

In Norse mythology Laufey was Loki's mother, his father was rather Fárbauti . In the comics, Laufey has been reinterpreted as Loki's father and one of the Frost Giants, while Farbauti has more recently been declared Loki's mother. After Odin had slain Laufey in battle, he took his son to himself. Laufey's appearance in the film, including the blue skin, is based on a redesign of the cartoon character that was made just a few years before the film.

In Norse mythology, Sif was Thor's wife, whose special feature is her blond hair. In the comics, however, the black-haired Sif is a warrior who occasionally fights alongside Thor. Since she loves Thor, she originally rivaled Jane Foster for his favor. Sif later merged her life force with Foster to save the latter's life, but the two were separated again some time later. In the film, she is only portrayed as Thor's comrade in arms, although according to director Kenneth Branagh, subtle hints can be found in the film that Sif actually feels more than friendly feelings for Thor.

Thor's friends Hogun, Fandral and Volstagg, the "Warriors Three" (alternatively translated in the comics as "the three warriors" or "the brave three") were originally invented for the comics. Hogun is the only one of the three who is not originally an Ase and is based freely on the actor Charles Bronson , Fandral on the actor Errol Flynn and the overweight Volstagg on the literary character of Sir John Falstaff . The personalities of the three in the film largely correspond to the original comic, the appearance of the film characters, on the other hand, represents a free interpretation of the comic characters. In particular, Volstagg's corpulence is much more pronounced in the comics than in the film.

The character of Phil Coulson played by Clark Gregg was originally invented for the film Iron Man and also appeared in its sequel, Iron Man 2 (2010), which takes place immediately before the current story of Thor . Nick Fury was originally introduced in the comics as a soldier who fought in World War II until he was transferred to the then modern era as head of SHIELD intelligence . However, SHIELD and Fury rarely deal with Thor in the comics of the “classic” Marvel universe. In addition, the Nick Fury of the "classic" Marvel universe is white, unlike the movie version. The portrayal of Fury in the film is based instead on an alternative version of the character from the comics of the " Ultimate Universe ", whose appearance is based on Samuel L. Jackson . This had given Marvel permission for it at the time. Just like Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Jackson has also appeared as Nick Fury in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 . Jasper Sitwell, in turn, was a SHIELD agent in the comics, who in the meantime took on the task of liaison between SHIELD and the company Stark International, whose director Tony Stark (who is also the superhero Iron Man ) was. Sitwell's appearance in the film is very different from his comic model.

Clint Barton is better known in the comics as the superhero Hawkeye . Originally he was introduced as an opponent of Iron Man , who was mistaken for a criminal and then fought against Iron Man several times. He also worked with the Black Widow, a Soviet spy. Eventually, Hawkeye became honest and a member of the Avengers , which the Black Widow later joined. The idea to turn him into a SHIELD agent, however, goes back to the comic series The Ultimate from the " Ultimate Universe ", in which he was together with the Black Widow member of a department of the superhero team responsible for covert operations called "The Ultimate" which in turn was subordinate to SHIELD. The film counterpart of the Black Widow was also introduced in Iron Man 2 as a SHIELD agent. While the Hawkeye of the "classic" Marvel Universe uses a classic longbow as a weapon, the "ultimate" Hawkeye uses a modern compound bow just like its film counterpart . Jeremy Renner's appearance in the film is also based on the original portrayal of the "ultimate" Hawkeye, who, unlike its "classic" counterpart, initially did without a superhero costume including a mask. Both versions of the character have only to do with Thor in that they are both members of the same team. In the film, Renner's role is simply referred to as "Barton", but the name "Hawkeye" is used by director Kenneth Branagh in the audio commentary on the DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film.

In the comics as in the film, the Destroyer is an inanimate, enchanted armor that was once created by Odin to protect Asgard. Loki repeatedly brought the Destroyer under his control and let it attack Thor. In contrast to its film counterpart, the Destroyer in the comics is even more resilient and can only be defeated by Thor with great effort, even at full power. The appearance of the Destroyer in the film largely corresponds to the comic model.

The roles of Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis, as well as the small town of Puente Antiguo, were specially invented for the film.

The "urn" (in the original "Casket") is based on the "Casket of Eternal Winters" (in the original "Casket of Ancient Winters"), which was introduced in the comics in 1984 and is able to release the icy cold of Niflheim . In addition, it rejuvenates its respective guardian over time. In contrast to the representation in the film, the comic model actually looks like a box .

The film takes great liberties with the depiction of the rainbow bridge Bifröst and the world ash Yggdrasil : The comic models are closely based on the example from Nordic mythology, so Bifröst is traditionally actually represented as a solid, walkable rainbow , while Yggdrasil is a giant tree that stands out across the entire dimension in which Asgard is located. The earth, which as "Midgard" represents one of the nine worlds of Norse mythology, is not in the same dimension, but its axis runs parallel to the tree. In the film, however, Bifröst is an actual bridge with a recognizable technological structure, at the end of which there is a kind of observatory. From there Heimdall can let the sir travel between the nine worlds. Yggdrasil is a system of galactic nebulae that connect the worlds and whose structure resembles a tree.

J. Michael Straczynski, the author of the film plot and the author of Thor comics from 2007 to 2009 , made a cameo as a pickup driver who discovered Thor's hammer in the desert. Even Stan Lee , one of the inventors of the cartoon version of Thor, like in almost every Marvel film adaptations made an appearance, in this case, as a driver of another pickup which tries to pull the hammer with a chain from the stone. The entire scene is based on a similar scene from a booklet of the comic series Die Fantastischen Vier written by Straczynski .

An advertising poster in Puente Antiguo, which can be seen several times during the course of the film, gives the motto of the state of New Mexico , "Land of Enchantment" (German: "Land of Enchantment"), the addition "Journey into Mystery" (German: " Journey into the mysterious "). This is the title of the Marvel comic series, in which Thor made his first appearances from 1962.

Thor's marketing campaign included director Kenneth Branagh and actors Chris Hemsworth , Natalie Portman , Kat Dennings , Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg appearing at San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2010, a special commercial that took place during the Super Bowl was broadcast in February 2011, a website for a recruiting campaign by the fictional secret service SHIELD in collaboration with the Acura vehicle brand, as well as other advertising contracts with Dr Pepper , 7-Eleven , Visa and Burger King , who, like Acura, advertised the film and in return for product placement were housed in the film. To celebrate the official theatrical release of the film in the United States, an advertising campaign was held on May 5, 2011 on the premises of the New York Stock Exchange , during which employees could win cinema tickets. At the close of the stock exchange, the stock exchange bell was rung by the then Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso, an actor in a Thor costume and other high-ranking representatives of Marvel.

For the official trailers , a different, less emotional version of Odin's rebuke to Thor before his exile from Asgard was sometimes used. Instead, the finished film shows the last shot of the scene in question, for which director Kenneth Branagh gave actor Anthony Hopkins the direction of playing a father whose heart was broken by his son. Thor's realization that he landed on earth is completely missing in the finished film.

The video game adaptations for the film were published by Sega in the USA on May 3, 2011 in Germany under the title Thor: God of Thunder and were for the PlayStation 3 , the Nintendo Wii , the Nintendo DS and the Xbox 360 available. The toy manufacturer Hasbro released under the title Thor: The Mighty Avenger toy figures of most of the characters from the film as well as Thor's helmet, his hammer Mjolnir and the sword of Odin as role-playing accessories.

An animated series announced for 2010, which was to include 26 episodes, was never realized. Instead, a direct-to-video cartoon entitled Thor: Tales of Asgard was released in May 2011 .

The soundtrack with the film music composed by Patrick Doyle was released in the USA on May 3rd, in Germany on April 29th, 2011.

Reviews

The reviews of Thor have been largely positive.

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online was satisfied with the film: "With 'Thor', the superhero publishing house and the Paramount film studio succeeded in making another film adaptation of a heroic story after a long time." Although the background story is "a bit gaga" , but "that's the way it is when you get involved with the mythical, epic stories that are told in superhero comics." Director Kenneth Branagh has "from the superhero saga a fast-paced, brightly colored interpretation of the classic drama ' Heinrich V. '”And showed“ an amazing sense of the dynamism that a superhero spectacle needs nowadays in order to become a blockbuster ”. Borcholte describes the “general clarity of the plot” as an advantage, but “even in the well-dosed beatings and action scenes, Branagh shows tact without missing the necessary force.” What is missing, however, is “a bit of dirt and grime: rough-legged northern gods Odin's table, one expects steaming roast wild boar, mead made from skulls and hosts of scantily clad concubines. Branagh's Asgård, on the other hand, is futuristic and pompous, but as clean and sterile as an airport terminal. ”Overall, all actors would play their roles with“ due pathos and necessary wit ”,“ above all Anthony Hopkins , who does not make the mistake, with his Odin make thundering overacting a caricature. ”Meanwhile, Tom Hiddleston “ makes his Loki an interesting villain with a slight ambivalence ”. Natalie Portman and Stellan Skarsgård on the other hand "[show] that you can play convincingly even when you are surrounded by green screens and everything is constantly flying around your ears". Leading actor Chris Hemsworth finally makes "a good figure as the god of thunder with his nuanced game between royal rascal and rock star". In conclusion, Borcholte noted that Thor lacked the "[compulsive] ironization" that he thought he could make out in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Iron Man 2 . “But to measure yourself against Christopher Nolan's gloomy Batman blockbusters or the emphatic ' Spider-Man ' films, this 'Thor' is nowhere near deep enough. But it always leaves a good impression. "

Jörg Wunder from Tagesspiegel also took a liking to Thor : Although the premise is “strong stuff”, “[w] hen you let yourself be drawn into the somewhat confused plot of 'Thor' without resistance, that says a lot about the qualities of the film. "The plot lacks" any plausibility, but it is a lot of fun. "The choice of actors was also convincing: Chris Hemsworth was a" good - and extremely well-built - choice as a naive god of thunder ", Anthony Hopkins" the ideal father of gods ", Natalie Portman “a believable love interest” and Tom Hiddleston “exactly the kind of seductive villain whose reappearance in the second part we are already looking forward to.” The only real point of criticism is the “damned 3-D technology, which is visually very beautiful Film robs the necessary brightness and brilliance in many scenes because of a few ridiculous effects. ”In conclusion, Wunder described Thor as“ [k] lasse popcorn cinema ”.

Jan Hamm from Filmstarts.de described Thor as a "charming cinema spectacle with devotedly human gods, colorful fantasy panoramas and crashing action". He was particularly impressed by the approach to the mythological background: "The Marvel team around director Kenneth Branagh and producer Kevin Feige are to be credited with how thematically this problem is tackled." In addition, the figure of Thor is "[n] oh all broken idealists of the last years of superhero cinema […] the most accessible comic hero ”. Actor Chris Hemsworth gives the character a "ravishingly naive charm - sometimes quick-tempered, sometimes silly, but always very sympathetic." As the secret star of the film, however, Hamm rather identified Tom Hiddleston: "Loki, his antagonist, who is sensitive between deep injury and Machiavellian striving for power, is one such a fascinating figure that his relatively compact appearance is hardly satisfactory. After all, Branagh smuggles a bit of Shakespearian hubris through Loki - Marvel should have allowed more of that. ”Furthermore, Anthony Hopkins plays“ a solemn Odin ”, Natalie Portman plays over the“ drawing board draft of her Jane with skillful cuteness ”, and Idris Elba was even allowed to “breathe a little mystery into the otherwise direct film as an opaque portal guard Heimdall.” However, Hamm was not completely satisfied: “Yes, 'Thor' would have been more mysterious. With all the riot that Asgard's children are making, there is hardly any room for a devout astonishment at this strange magic technology. ”The battle between the Asir and the frost giants at the beginning of the film is“ dealt with lovelessly, without the surprised Earthlings yet another camera view Still, Hamm gave Thor 3.5 out of 5 points and described the film as a “strong film”, which proves “that, in addition to fatalistic deconstruction à la Christopher Nolan's ' The Dark Knight ' or Zack Snyder's ' Watchmen ', it is still healthy and can give fun superhero cinema. "

Michael Kohler from the Frankfurter Rundschau, on the other hand, only liked the scenes that take place on earth. He compared the mythological approach of the film with Hop - Easter bunny or superstar? : “The humor is also largely the same, only when it comes to noisy violence, 'Thor' is a hammer handle length ahead.” He accused the scriptwriters of “not knowing much about the Nordic legends of the gods” and “[o] hne the amusing banter on earth would be the whole 'Thor' universe just smoke and mirrors. ”The scenes in Asgard and Jotunheim are“ dull declamations and architectural bombast of the dreary kind ”. In addition, Kenneth Branagh “couldn't think of anything other than constantly tilting the camera and looking sideways at the action from above or below. He probably wants to emphasize that the human perspective - the camera at eye level - is not decisive for the story. But we have known that for a long time. "

Ekkehard Knörer was not at all impressed by the taz : He described the beginning of the film as “as humorous as [endless] opening sequence” and the attempt to reconcile the world tree Yggdrasil of Nordic mythology with modern quantum physics as “ usual Esoquatsch ”. In the scenes that take place in Asgard and Jotunheim, director Kenneth Branagh believes "in all seriousness [...] to have to play Shakespeare", while Thor's time on earth was mostly "fish-on-dry-jokes". Knörer also criticized the " camera tilted diagonally towards the horizon for an inexplicable reason, as with Heinz Emigholz ". The backgrounds of Asgard and Jotunheim, created using computer animation, are even "incredibly ugly". Overall, Kenneth Branagh “always knew how to direct with a sledgehammer”, in the case of Thor “he films and cuts reliably without any sense of framing and tableaus, for rhythm or the right tone. And he finds his hammer music master in the restlessly angry composer Patrick Doyle . "

Thor as part of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe"

Clark Gregg's role as SHIELD agent Phil Coulson was last seen in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD .

Just like the previously released films Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor and Thor - The Dark Kingdom are part of a larger, coherent universe, the "Marvel Cinematic Universe".

SHIELD agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg , and his boss, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson , have both appeared in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 . In Iron Man 2 , Coulson says goodbye to Tony Stark, the head of Stark Industries, who is also the eponymous superhero Iron Man, with the words that he has been assigned to a new assignment in New Mexico. In a scene after the credits, he arrives at the site of Thor's hammer, which leads directly to Coulson's appearance in Thor . In Thor , Coulson is also asked by his colleague Jasper Sitwell when he sees the Destroyer whether the latter is "one of Stark's".

After SHIELD confiscated Jane Foster's equipment and research papers, Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) mentions a physicist, "a pioneer in the field of gamma radiation," who was never heard of after SHIELD showed up, bringing up Bruce Banner from The Incredible Hulk is meant.

The frost giants' attack on Earth in AD 965, seen at the beginning of Thor , takes place in Tønsberg , Norway . In the film Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Johann Schmidt, alias Red Skull, found the “Tesseract Cube” there in 1942, hidden in a wall relief of the world tree Yggdrasil . Schmidt describes the cube as a "jewel in Odin's treasury". When Schmidt touches the cube with his hands at the end of the film, a system of galactic nebulae can be seen around him, which corresponds to the portrayal of Yggdrasil in Thor . In the scene after Thor's credits , Nick Fury again presents the cube to Erik Selvig.

In the end credits of Thor the Note following "Thor will return in The Avengers (German:" Thor is in " The Avengers return"). The film Marvel's The Avengers , which was released in 2012, brings together the main characters of all previous films in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe", including Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye / Clint Barton, in a joint team for the first time. Tom Hiddleston , Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson can also be seen again in their roles as Loki, Erik Selvig and Nick Fury.

A sequel to Thor with the title Thor - The Dark Kingdom (orig.Thor : The Dark World ) was initially announced for November 15, 2013, but came to US cinemas on November 8, 2013 and a few days before that, on October 31st, in German cinemas. Kenneth Branagh was no longer directing and Alan Taylor took over his post .
