The casket (loan word from Latin scatula ; see also box ) is a smaller, often elaborately crafted container for storing more or less valuable things (money, jewelry and the like). A box can be made of wood , leather , stone ( gemstone ), ivory or metal and was often used as a gift in the Middle Ages .

In a figurative sense, a box can also denote the (private) budget of a regent .
