history

The first known inhabitants of the area on which Manhattan Beach is located today were Indians from the Tongva tribe. After the Spaniards founded the Mission San Gabriel in 1771 and ten years later the settlement El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles ("City of the Queen of Angels"), a small street was built that crossed the salt flats that the Indians mined , associated with Los Angeles. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1822, the new Mexican government auctioned the land to the highest bidders. In the case of what is now Manhattan Beach, this was Antonio Ygnacio Avila , who had purchased 91 square kilometers of land in the area to raise sheep . Most of California's new landowners lost their possessions in the years following the Mexican-American War . After the Scottish immigrant Sir Robert Burnett acquired the land of Avila in 1863 , he leased it to the Canadian Daniel Freeman in 1873 for $ 33,000 and then returned to Scotland. In 1885 Freeman bought the ranch from Burnett for $ 140,000. George H. Peck later acquired a large part of the land that now forms the northern part of Manhattan Beach.

In 1903, the Pacific Electric Railway built a suburban line that stretched west from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica , from there along the shoreline south to Redondo Beach , and also passed Manhattan Beach. In 1940 the line was stopped again. Today a bicycle path runs roughly along the course of the former line.
