Actual films

The character Agent Coulson was introduced in the movie Iron Man (2008), in which he tried several times to question Tony Stark (Iron Man) about his amazing escape from captivity by terrorists with his self-made high-tech armor. Coulson is one of several agents who escort Tony's assistant, Virginia "Pepper" Potts , to arrest Obadiah Stane (Iron Monger) in a Stark Industries laboratory after his criminal activities were revealed. At the end of the film, Coulson instructs Tony to read a prepared statement from the events at a press conference in which he denies any involvement in Iron Man's activities, but instead Tony reveals that he is Iron Man himself.

In Iron Man 2 (2010), Coulson is assigned to monitor Tony Stark's brief house arrest by SHIELD until he is assigned to investigate an incident in New Mexico. In the post-credit scene , Coulson, who had previously been removed from Stark's house arrest, arrives at the site of a hammer in the New Mexico desert; this scene is a cliffhanger for the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series called Thor .

In the film Thor (2011) the god of thunder Thor Odinson is banished to earth by his father, who puts his power and his hammer Mjolnir under a spell. The hammer also lands on earth and can only be lifted by someone who proves to be "worthy" of it. Phil Coulson has the site secured. Thor secretly gains access to the cordoned off site, but is also unable to lift the hammer. He then lets SHIELD take him into custody and interrogate him by Coulson. In the further course of the film, Thor's half-brother Loki sends the so-called "Destroyer" to Earth and Coulson asks his colleague Agent Jasper Sitwell whether he is "one of Stark". At the end of the film, Thor informs him that he can count him as one of his allies from this day on if he has seized the research documents from the astrophysicist Jane Foster and her mentor Dr. Erik Selvig , handed it back.

Clark Gregg also slipped back into the role of Phil Coulson in Marvel's The Avengers (2012). In the film, he hires the agent Natascha Romanoff (Black Widow) Dr. Bruce Banner (Hulk) for the Avengers Initiative and later informs Steve Rogers (Captain America) that he was present when he was rescued from cold sleep after 70 years in 2011. In the course of the film Coulson is stabbed through the heart with a scepter and killed by Loki while trying to save Thor. With the news of Coulson's death, the once divided Avengers manage to work together and stop Loki and the Chitauri sent by Thanos .

In Captain Marvel (2019), Phil Coulson, freshly recruited by SHIELD, supports his superior agent Nick Fury on his mission in the mid-1990s . He supports the powerful Kree representative Carol Danvers alias Vers (Captain Marvel) in exploring her own past. At the same time, they try to end the war between the alien races of the Kree and the Skrulls.

One-shots

In addition to the MCU's feature films , five short films called Marvel One-Shots were produced, in which two short films revolve around the work of Agent Coulson. They were released with the respective Blu-rays of the movies.

Marvel Hiring: The Advisor (2011): Agent Coulson and Agent Sitwell discuss the Avengers Initiative as the Security Council demands that Emil Blondsky (Abomination) be part of the team. Nick Fury wants to avoid this and so the two agents hatch a plan. They send Tony Stark to see Lieutenant General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (featured in the final scene of the film The Incredible Hulk ) in the hope that the deal will then go through. Their plan succeeds and General Ross refuses to send Abomination to the Avengers.

Marvel Attitude: Something Funny Happened on the Road to Thor's Hammer (2011): Agent Phil Coulson is on his way to Thor's Hammer in New Mexico. He wants to buy a snack at a gas station while the gas station is attacked by two gangsters. They want Phil's car keys, so he hands them over. He also gives them his pistol. Immediately afterwards he throws flour at one of the gangsters and then puts both of them out of action. Coulson pays at the cash register and drives on.

  • During a global threat from a demonic being named Izel and Shrikes capturing her host, a person with Coulson's appearance named Sarge shows up. During this threat, it becomes clear that Sarge's physical form emerged when Coulson entered the fear dimension called by SHIELD during an earlier mission and there, through the energy of three monoliths, also called Di'Allas, his genetic and optical counterpart with few memories of himself was created. This physical form was taken by Izel's conspecific and lover named Pachakutiq in order to call conspecifics to earth with her and to be able to take over human hosts. This threat, as well as Sarge's physical form, has been eliminated by SHIELD.
  • With the help of Chronicoms Enoch, SHIELD agents travel back in time to 1931 to prevent Chronicoms from taking over Earth after Izel wiped out their home planet.
